Looking for a wiring diagram for the emergency battery parallel system. With the house battery switch off and the starter battery switch on, the house battery electrical panel is energized when the engine key switch is turned on. I find this strange.

Is the engine on during this situation? If so you have an isolation/auto charge device that is either bad or connected incorrectly. if the engine is off then there is someting in the instriment panel/engine wiring/3 way switch that is incorrect.
I think you are going to find that there is no "wiring diagram" that is your boat's wiring unless you make it yourself, which I recommend. There is so much variation in boat wiring that unless we know what devices are in the circut we will be giving incorrect advice.
Welcome to the club of inadvertent electrical workers.
The house batteries should have + to + and - to -, and that must be the way it is or you would see large sparks and flames, adding another battery to that system is simply two cables that connect + to + and - to -. The fun begins when you want to isolate that "start" battery form the house bank. Add a switch (3-way) and you have to remember to switch to "both" to keep the starter battery charged. This is so much of an inconvienance for most that they HAVE to have an automatic device that automajically connectes the two banks when the alternator is producing power and disconnects them when it is not. There are about 5 different concepts on how you do this "correctly" and they all work.
If you can identify what (if any) isolation device you are using that would be a start point to getting your system fixed.

Rereading your post and noting that you also have a start battery switch I'm thinking that you don't have any problem. The house batteries are isolated and the start battery is powering everything. That is normal.
Does the electrical panel go dead when both the house and start bat switches are off?

Bill, Thank you for your reply. The Cassiopeia is on the hard in the boat yard at the moment, and I am trying to get her ready to launch in three days. I appreciate your help
Yes the panel goes dead when both battery switches are off. I had replaced a relay in the starter system and was checking to make sure the engine turned over with the key switch on and the starter button depressed. Much to my surprise, with the house battery switch off, and the starter battery switch on, when the key switch was turned on the house panel was energized. I never started the engine as I did not want to run it without water flowing from the salt water intake. It seemed to me that without the engine (and alternator) running, if the key switch was left on, the starter battery would be drained operating the house systems. Of course the engine stop alarm would be ringing. So I guess they figure one would either start the engine and take the load off the battery, or turn the key switch off to silence the alarm. So I guess you are correct and I do not have a problem. Thanks again. Dave Jackson
