Could you give me your thoughts, on which boat is a better value a Beneteau 423 or a Hunter 41DS? Do you have any good or bad comments? Proformance, Durability, Craftmanship, Horror stories? Thanks

...HINT

I like seeing the USA flag displayed on AMERICAN PRODUCTs...but that's just me. Maybe I'm just a fuddy duddy. USA makes fine boats, I know, I bought one.

they're both american made.

Hunter's are built in Alachua, Florida. Some Beneteau's are built are built in Marion, SC.

Beneteau

It's easy enough to find out which models are built in the US. Just mess around in their website or call them. I went through their Marion plant last year and was really impressed with their quality control. I also own a 10 year old B Oceanis 281 which was built there and love the boat.

Where built isn't the only story

There is more to it then just where it's built. Where the profit goes is also important. Many foreign cars are built here in the US, but the profits go overseas and increases our trade deficit. Any big ticket items, I always buy american made and owned.

what i said had nothing to do with where things are built but how things are built there. if you ever listen to 'car talk,' they like to say nodoby imitates the french and the french don't imitate anybody. i don't see taking a large financial risk on something that may be 'just as good.' in the two years i've had my catalina 30, i don't think the resale value has lost a penny. on a warm day in a perfect sea on a reach i never remember thinking 'if only i had another boat.,

Hunter vs Beneteau

Before we bought our new Beneteau 423 we looked at the Hunter 44 as well and I we made our decision based on the following: 1. The Beneteau cost less. 2. I wanted a mast head rig so we could clear some bridges in our dailing area. 3. My wife and I love the traditional lines of the Beneteau. Does that make the Hunter 44 anyless a good value-No. 4. Decide how you will most likely use your new boat and go from there. Storage, sail plan, fuel and water capacity as well as how she looks. The 423 is built inn Marion by americans if that is a concern. It really comes down to you personal needs and desires. Either way, enjoy you boat and fair winds!

Both Great Boats

The Beneteau was Sail Mag. top ten in 2003, and the Hunter was Cruising World's winner in 2005. According to Sail Mag. the Beneteau 423 is built in So. Carolina. On paper they are very close. The Hunter is a foot wider but carries quite a bit more sail and more ballast. I would be proud to have either one in my slip! For boats this large and expensive I would want to audition both before writing the check.

Both good, but some differences

Both are good value, but there are some differences. The LOA of the H41 is 40'4". The LOA of the B423 is 43'2" I believe. A more comparable compare is between the H41 and the Beneteau 393 which has an LOA of 39'4". That's the comparison we made when shopping this size. We really needed a boat to fit in a 40' slip! Also in your compare, one is a deck salon model, the other is not. Since you indicated you are interested in value, look at the non-deck salon model of the Hunter 41 (known as the AC for aft-cockpit). Essentially the AC is the same boat as the H41 DS but $8-9K cheaper. The DS only gives you a taller salon with taller portlights. We chose the H41AC over the B393.

Fractional rig vs Full rig....they will sail

differently. It may help you decide one way or the other. I got used to my H36 and loved the Jeanneau 43DS...almost bought one. I like my fractional rig, my rack and pinion steering (no cables to deal with), Corion counters, lead keel...so I stayed with my boat and didn't move up to the Jeanneau. Saved alot of money too.

I mentioned Jeanneau because Jeanneau and

Beneteau are now the same company with similar systems.

Beneteau

I personally like beneteau but it what you like. I would go to the owner websites and read what owners think. Also a boat that cost that much I would ask to go on test sails.

Let the Hornets fly!!!!!

It is really quite sad and a tad hypocritical that a genuine question asked about the comparison between two sail boats degenerates into "nationalistic holier than thou responses". To all the proud buyers of things USA, go check your households and see how many articles you or your family have recently purchased that are stamped "Made in China". That will get you excited. If not, how about this: anything is better than a Hunter.

The Hunter has All-Lead Keel

Looking ahead a few years at maintenance, the Hunter has an all-lead keel and I believe the Beneteaus have a "composite" lead and iron (or some other ferous metal) keel. Lead tends to require less maintenance than iron so depending on your sensitivity to appearance, or ability to do the work, or willingness to pay the yard big bucks to do the work, this may be a factor to consider.

Daryl: How much do you want for your boat? I will purchase if we never hear you bitching about this thing boat ever again. I will be worth it just to get rid of this negative (usually mis-informed) opinion. When some asks for advice they do not want to hear your crap. Give them and everyone else on this site some slack!

Agree with windblown

I am 60 years old and have made a career in the boating indusrty. I have built them, rigged them, sold them, cruised them, raced them, etc. I am always amazed when I read the kind of crap guys like Daryl write. Very typical of the type of fellow who goes sailing with a friend, attends a boat show, reads two books, buys a little boat, sails ten times and becomes an "expert" telling everyone what to do. Then gets caught in a storm, gets the shit scared out of him, sells his little boat and becomes an "expert" at something else. Windblown is right, shut up Daryl... we don't want to hear it.
