looking at Hunter 40's Does anyone have any info on shorting the keel on a 6'6" draft boat? Is it worth considering ? Any special areas to look at? other than normal ? have looked at a few and seen some gel coat crazing around Hatchs and chain plates. Is this common ? looking at 85' 86' 87'boats. Thanks much john S

inquiries on hunter 40

I have a 1985 Hunter Legend 40.I didn,t know that they made a 6'6" draft. Mine is only 5'. Are you sure that is correct? The crazing is not uncommon. You can reach me at ARFSAIL102@aol.com

keel draft reduction

Suggest you take a look at www.marsmetal.com They are one of several companies that can provide you with info on providing a bulb (split torpedo) for your keel. Most larger boat yards can cut the keel and install the bulb. You can possible do it yourself with the right tools and time. According to the folks at Mars, if the keel is lead (not cast iron) you should expect to spend $3000 to 3500 on the material and 1000 to 1500 on labor. There was an article in Sail Magizine (Aug 88) that is reprinted on the marsmetal site that discusses draft reduction. I'm looking to shortening the rudder by about 30% as well. Do anyone have experience info on how that would effect the boat?
