Our Hunter 40 (1986 vintage?) has a shallow well for the mast step. It's a problem. It collects but does not drain water. I've noticed that later models had the same B&R rig with a raised maststep platform.
Recently, a surveyor suggested fabricating a new mast step with a base that fills the well and raises the mast an inch or so.
Another suggestion by a boatyard maintenance chief was to fill the well with a custom made piece of marine construction plastic. That option puts no load on the filler, requires no mast removal, requires no shroud and stay adjustments. But, I worry about the cosmetic outcome.
Has anyone else addressed this problem?
