Has anyone installed a diesel generator on a Hunter 40.5 of this vintage and if so:
What size?
What Brand?
Where did you locate it?
About what was the cost, including installation?
Pros and Cons (I already know about noise at anchorage, etc. I'm talking about pros and cons of whay you did)
Anyting you'd do different?
Pictures if you have them.

This is just some advance planning. As we say in the south "If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!" so if the discussion comes up on a hot July or August night I'd like to be able to be armed for a discussion.

You can post for everyone to cuss and discuss or you can pm me.

Thanks

Hi Smokey, I have a 1993 40.5 and I have a Phasor 6KW generator installed in the port aft locker. It will power anything you want and is worth it's weight in gold. Now that I have had a boat with a generator I will never be without one. Only draw back is the noise in the aft cabin but if you are using the generator while on the hook we always run the A/C until bed time and then cut it all off with the boat closed up and with a fan the boat stays cool all night. The phasor 6kw will burn about .3 gal/hr so having one is a no brainer. If I can answer any more questions get back to me and we will talk.

Thanks Mike, Looks like a clean setup.

What did you do with your CNG tank or have you converted to Propane and have the tanks somewhere else?

My son is in the Navy and just got selected for Naval Intel (a classic oximoron, I know). He will be starting Intel school in March and we'll be up there from Beaufort SC sometime. I may try and get in touch with you and check out the installation. Thanks for the info.

Dan we have a '95 40.5. It had a Fisher Pander 4 Kva when we bought her, but this was already past it's use by date. We replaced it this year after a lot of research with a Paguro 4000 (the Fisher came in a close second as both brands are based on a Ferryman diesel) The Paguro has an Italian generator where the Fisher is all German. Naturally the Paguro looks better.;)
This unit runs our 16 BTU air con et all.

It is situated in the port stern locker. We have 600 ah of batteries in the starboard locker to balance this. Our gas bottles are in the port lazarett.
I put in sound reduction foam but in hind sight I would put in the water separation system of exhaust as well.

I did all the work with good clear instructions, except for the actual connection of the 110 v. This had to be done by a licence electrician to get certification.

Photos are with the sound casing off.
Good luck.

I installed a Westerbeke 5kw in stbd lazarette

We have a 1997 h40.5 and I personally installed this Westerbeke in 1998 when the boat was new. I chose the Westerbeke because it was the smallest and lightest 5kw unit that I could find that ran at 1800 rpm. It powers both A/C's, HW heater, 110A of battery chargers simultaneously. The total installation cost was about $8500 for the genset and all materials. I donated my labor.

I installed it in the stbd lazarette and located the house batteries to the port lazarette because my dealer told me that the factory located the optional generator in that location.

Service of the generator is a challenge due to the tightness of the fit. A sound-proof box will not fit for this generator so I lined the compartment with lead-foam sheets of sound absorbing material.

The lower 1800 rpm speed and the sound insulation make this a reasonably quiet installation. We close the aft cabin doors when we run and the noise level in the main salon is very acceptable. In the cockpit you can carry on a conversation without raising your voice. The noise in the aft cabin is quite loud.

One advantage of the port lazarette location is that if you ever need to service the fuel tank sender (I have) you can get to it without having to pull the generator. Only the plastic water tank is under the stbd lazarette and I don't think that is very likely to require access.

Hey all
Have a 93 40.5 and don't have a genset. never needed it. I do have a 100 amp alternator and 45 watts of solar. Seems to work fine as I have holding plates in the reefer and freezer. Allows me to run them only during the day when the solar is powered up and coast during the night. I've found that after a day of sailing we can motor the last bit up that river to a snug anchorage and that keeps the batts charged up. The wife and I are very cold blooded so we have never used the AC except when at the dock and friends are aboard.

I had installed a high current balmar alternator, and found that with 2 fridges, plus other loads, I was charging for 2 hours per day with 600 AH of batteries.
I looked at the optimal location, and decided it was the port aft cockpit locker.
Being very concerned about sound, I elected to go with the Fischer Panda 4kw, as it was the quietest solution.
Furthermore, the totally sealed enclosure was the best solution, versus trying putting in insulation, etc.
So I bought the FP, and started planning the install.

And then decided to buy a 49 which had a 12kw built in.

As I said, it was an expensive upgrade.

How is that FP holding up?

I've read mixed reviews - taken with a pinch of salt because hell I read mixed reviews for everything!

Would greatly appreciate a review of it

On the 49, hunter put in a 12kw unit.
Bit of overkill if you ask me.
Having said that, it runs quite well
I had some issues with relays burning out. FP replaced them at no charge .
Overall, I am very happy,
We have the water gas separator.
Can't even hear it running out in the cockpit
