Good day gentlemen , ladies

as a non-owner of a Hunter sailboat I have a question about the galley concept in the Hunter 39.
I own a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40DS and my galley and general layout is somewhat to be compared with that from the Hunter 39.
I intend to install a grabpole , similar to the one on the Hunter.
Here's a link to the jeanneau board where you can also find some pics as a reference to what I mean.

But before drilling holes in my boat I would really like to know if that is such a good idea.
Meaning , is that pole a nuisance in any way , or are there Hunter-owners who feel that the pole is an unnecessary gadget .
I was thinking of using it as an extra support in rough weather , but also as a way of fixing shelves and all.

I would love to hear/read the comments from field experts.
Thanks already for sharing the information.

Greetings from Europe.

I have this in my H376 and it is a considerable help under way.
Would suggest moving your pole outboard by quite a bit to allow people free movement past when well heeled.
Also make top fixing as secure bottom one because one never knows when some bozo will apply full body weight to it! They pull fore and aft as well as athwartships.
From memory mine is 1" diameter stainless tube.
Looked but sorry no picture.

Sailbleu, from my perspective we own a 41DS that has that pole in it and both the Admiral and I really like it. Underway it has been a very handy grab point and we do use it a lot. I am not certain what your beam is but ours is 13' which makes grabing for the handrails under the ports tough for her and relieves the strain on the fiddles. We did not have one on our previous boat (33') but would really miss it if we were to go back.

Sorry but there is not much technical help here.....

This was standard on the 39 when first brought out in 2010. It was deleted on some 2011 hulls but we just took delivery of our 2012 and the pole is there. I think they deleted it initially to open up the salon. We are glad it has been reintroduced for safety purposes. We also had the factory install a 100% lead deep keel, starboard companion way doors and a cabinet door for the cutout above the stairs. We originally looked at the Hunter 36 but once you are in the 39, it is a no brainer. We previously had a 2004 Catalina 34.

Well , that's 3 out of 3. I guess there's no discussion , this pole seems to be an addition to the comfort and safety on the boat.
Apparently no disadvantages , non that i can read of anyway.
I'll start measuring up and buy all the necessary bits and bobs.
I also had a SS 1" pole in mind , I believe I still have one lieing around somewhere.
I'll keep monitoring this topic , in case there're more testimonials , which will also be appreciated no doubt.
Thanks for the input gentlemen , it's been a help in making a decision.

Kind regards

More than 200 hits , and only 3 responses from owners with a grabpole , strange.
Are there so few Hunter's sold with this feature ?

Kind regards

I thought of leaving some feedback on this project , although be it through a given link of another board.

As I mentioned before , I own a jeanneau 40Ds , but they are quite similar to the Hunter , so I guess everyone can install such a grabe pole.
I'm already convinced of the advantage of having a central grabbing point during heavy weather.
Leaves me to figure out how to fix some shelves and all.
Thank again for the fieldexpert advise

Kind regards
