Hey Everyone, I am looking for some information about the Hunter 386 Stern Rails. (mine is a 2003 H386)

Here is the situation: My Hunter is currently in another country and I need exact dimensions of the Stern rail so the repair company can order parts to repair my badly bent stern rail properly and timely so I can finally sail my boat from the USA to Canada. I will attach a picture for reference.

I am looking for 4 things:

1. To confirm the material used for the stern rails on the Hunter 386 is Stainless steel?

2. What is the outside diameter of the stern rail tubing?

3. What is the Diameter of the mounting pads?

4. Confirmation that there is 2 different mounting pads used on the 386 stern rails (one with 3 screw holes and one with 4 screw holes) & confirmation that the diameter for both of these is the same.

I know this is a longshot but if someone has the info or access to take the mesurements on their boat easily (not like mine that is over 500nm away and in another country) I would GREATLY appreciate the help.

Suggest you contact Al at the forum store here. He was able to source me a bow pulpit built with the original jigs used for my 1994 Hunter 40.5. It was considerably less than what I was quoted for a repair shop to fix/build. He may or may not be able to help you with stern rails but if he can it will probably save you $$$, even with shipping.

Here is what I did when a hit and run person damaged our stern rails. I removed the damaged portion and took them to our local rail shop who repaired them like new at a fraction of the cost of new.

Purchased a full port stern rail back in 2010 from from SBO. It came, it fit reasonably well, looked good as the original and life went on.

If you are going to start to order parts, fabricating curves, and hoping your "foreign" company knows how to TIG weld rather than a quick and dirty MIG job, good luck. You should also resign yourself to not returning to Canada at the end of this summer at least.

Your stern rail looks identical to my H-310 port stern except the damage is far worse that mine in 2010. Even being close to Seattle and everything I could need for the job at hand, I still went with a new rail. Just so much easier and the outcome guaranteed. Even if your repairs were to be done here, I can't see how repairs would be cheaper than a new rail given all that damage. And it's unlikely to look as good as the original.

Good luck either way.

I agree 100% with you, I want to buy new but can’t find it anywhere and unfortuneatly when I contacted Hunter owners they were not able to locate the Jig for the part to be fabricated… That is why I ended up thinking the “fixing it route”. Thanks for the help I will continue to search in the hope to find a way to get it new. My last resort is to use my starboard stern rail as an “identical opposite” and use a fabricator to reproduce as a Stern rail.

happy sailing, cheers

Thank you everyone for the help. I have a few options in front of me (repair in NY or waiting on an answer from Al at hunter owners ) fingers crossed I can get the part made new with a jig.

Cheers
