We plan to buy a Hunter late model 380 of 1999 and would like to have your comments on the following items; 1) Fiberglass arch. The fiberglass arch can be permanently removed 2) Selden alum light mast and boom. 3) Harken traveler system on coachroof Thank you

Hunter called the boat you are talking about a 376 before they changed the name to 380. We have a 1999 380 and have no problems with the arch, traveler or Seldon mast.

More infos required on light mast

Thank you for the answer. What is bothering us is the strenght. Is it reliable in strong winds? What is the advantages to have a light mast ? Is its life duration supposed to be as long as a conventional one ? Do you think that your boat could support a conventional mast if ever you have a problem with this one ? What were the worst conditions you sailed with your boat ? Do you sail in a lake or on the sea ? I will bbe waiting for your answer. Thank you in advance. Estelle

Selden mast

Hello Estelle - I don't believe the Selden mast would be considered a weak point; Selden makes solid spars and continues to gain marketshare today. I don't have any personal experience with them outside local daysailing so can't comment on performance and longevity in extreme conditions. With that being said, I do know several boat owners with Selden rigs and have heard no complaints and several rigger friends recommend them. Best, Trevor

380 no regrets

I dont think you have any thing to worry about The mast is a smaller in section because the B&R rig supports the mast so well. I have had our boat in 60+ knots and 10 ft seas at Santa Cruz Island and didn't see or feel the boat, arch or mast doing anything unusual The traveler on the arch is product of evolution going from the cockpit floor with end boom sheeting(easy to trim the sail and use the traveler but in the way) the next step was to the cabin top with mid boom sheeting (much harder to trim and use but out of the way)then back to end boom sheeting exept the arch keeps the mainsheet and traveler up and out of the way. This weekend we put the odometer over 10,000 miles and have had no problems with any of the systems on our boat. All around a great boat lots of room on the inside handles well sailing or motoring and is very easy to sail solo or with 2 people
