Our 2009 Hunter 38 (Mariner Package) came with a marine-grade Sony CDX-HS70MS FM/AM/CD Player stereo mounted on the main sliding hatch coaming (cowling), along with the Raymarine® ST-60 Speed and Depth displays, plus two speakers mounted on the underside of the Traveler Arch. In the main salon we have a Bose Bose® 3.2.1® Entertainment System. Sadly, the two systems are not connected (i.e., neither system feeds the AUX input of the other system).
As I prepare to replace the cockpit stereo with a marine-grade Kenwood KMR-M328BT Marine Digital Media Receiver with Alexa and Built in Bluetooth I noticed under the cowling a separate electronics module, perhaps an amplifier, that is connected to the main (head) unit of the Sony stereo with a BUS cable. There are two visible sets of left/right (stereo) RCS jacks that are presumably additional speaker output jacks (possibly for a sub-woofer). See attached photo--looking in to cowling through cut-out for Sony unit. Unfortunately, without disassembling the entire cowling, I cannot remove the mystery box, nor see/read any markings. I can feel what is presumably a label on the top of the box but cannot get a camera in to take a snapshot of it. And I cannot remove it as the screws are not accessible and the plywood to which it is attached is glued down.
UPDATE (9 Jun 2022): Mystery box pried loose ... turns out to be a Sony-specific SIRIUS radio receiver (SIR-SNY1); photo attached. Aside from the power, only the output cable was connected to the Sony unit; no other connections.
While I plan to simply use the existing wiring to the cockpit speakers and power, I would prefer to wire the existing Bose salon stereo to the new Kenwood cockpit stereo. Otherwise, I will rely on the Bluetooth capability of the Kenwood and wire a Bluetooth transmitter to the Bose Aux speaker outputs.
More important questions:
(1) What is the existing path for running wires into the sliding hatch cowling?
(2) Is there an easy wiring path from the location of the Bose stereo on the forward bulkhead of the main salon to the hatch cowling?
(3) How does one remove and replace the main salon the headliner without making a mess of it? UPDATE (9 Jun 2022): found but have not tried potential method: Removing and reinstalling vinyl cloth headliners
Final question, not particularly important: Though I am not inclined to make use of the mystery box, even if I find out what it is or its intended function, does anyone know for certain what that box is and are there any known drawings/documentation that can provide details about its connections? See update above.
Thank you in advance!
Regards,
Roger
