Can anyone advise me as to the best way to support the keel and boat after a travel lift haulout?
This is my first haulout since purchase survey when the boat just hung in the slings.
Thank You

The yard just normally puts it up high enough on stands to fit a 4 x 4 block of wood underneath. The keel doesn't take all the weight, but it is the jack stands that support the hull.

Thanks for your reply.
Do you happen to have any pictures of your boat out of the water?

Re: Our 376

I am assuming by your response that the boat cannot sit on the keel, is that correct?
How much of the weight of the boat can sit on the keel?

Re: Our 376

first off, the yard should set your boat. they are the experts in this, secondly i always thought that the keel did take all the weight and the stands were there preventing it from falling over.

Take a walk around a boatyard, you'll see how it is done. You boat should sit on it's keel (maybe with a block or a piece of plywood under it), with jackstands to keep it level and prevent it tipping over. The jackstands on one side should be connected to jackstands on the opposite side by a chain so the weight of the boat can't push them outboard. Most of the weight will be on the keel. the 376 has a displacement of 16k lbs, 5400 of that is ballast in the keel....that's a pretty good chunk of the weight. The internal structure has to be able to support holding on to that ballast in all kinds of conditions...so it is strong enough to handle the weight of the boat as it sits on the keel.

Hi Charlie

I should have prefaced my post with the fact that I have been a boater for over 40 years. I am used to the older "TANK" like built sailboats ie: Cal, Ericson, Ranger etc. that sit with full weight on their keels with absolutely no issue.
I have heard that some of the newer boats don't sit with full weight on their keels.

This post was purely a precautionary request before my first haulout with my Hunter.
Thanks again for any help with this particular boat.

Gotcha. And if you have the 6'6" draft, I can see the need to visit the issue. I'll be the guys at Marlowe Hunter - or any Hunter dealer could give you a definitive answer. Even if the structure is strong enough, there may be some special precautions needed to ensure you are sitting squarely on your keel. My boat has the shoal draft with the "finned torpedo" at the bottom, and my "fin" keel isn't a real high aspect narrow chord, so is sits on the keel just fine.
