Hunter 376 Anchor Rode to Locker Routing

Hi,

This is a question for folks (probably 376 owners) who have modified the anchor rode drop from their windlass to avoid the rode piling up/jamming.

I see a number of articles about how to use a PVC pipe to re route the line to the center of the locker. One thing I don't see in the posts is how folks attached the pipe to the hole where the line is coming in from the windlass. The hole where my line comes through does not have any bolts or holes to attach a pipe, and it doesn't feel like the system would work just "free standing." Thoughts/advice?

Hi Doug, Some thoughts, though I am not a 376 owner.
One of the advantages for the owner modification shown in the attachment with the pipe running the rode beneath the V-Berth, is the use of all chain. You look to be using 3 strand nylon rode. Likely you have a length of chain attached.

The 3 strand works great as an anchor rode, but it behaves differently when being guided into the anchor locker. It usually comes up with a twist imparted by the experience of being stretched holding the boat at anchor. It needs space to be left to coil in the anchor locker. That is why they design the Hawsepipe with a short stub. It allows the rode to fall free and find it's own way laying down. You may extend the pipe a bit to drop further from the windlass motor. Be sure there is adequate free fall for your anchor rode.

An alternative might be to change out your 3strand for 8plait nylon rode. It lays down in a more compact manner when dropping into the anchor locker.

I had the same concern (line not falling through the pipe) but I had the impression that some folks were using line + chain (vs all chain). I may have misread, though.

One person did note that he had success using a boat hook to "stuff" the line via the hawse hole--before making any modifications I may see if I can get away with doing the same. Anything to not have to keep hand-hauling my 45lb anchor and 75' of chain (although my chiropractor will be disappointed if I devise a successful system). Otherwise I may invest in some 8-plait.
