Hunter 37 Icebox insulation

What have people found about the quantity of insulation in the Hunter 37 or 37C icebox. I am having trouble deciding if I need more insulation or not. My 79 37C has a "shelf" in the hull-side of the icebox that appears to be for soda/beer cans. I think this needs to be insulated and closed in. 3 sides, top and bottom were easy to add additional information to. Hull side is less easy. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Can't have too much money or insulation.

Debra: You cannot have too much money or insulation. If you can find a way to add insulation, I suggest that you do it. Just little things like adding a seal to the ice box lid can make all the difference.

H37C icebox.

When Gene Greunder removed his completely he commented how well insulated it was. Everthing but the top that is. I have 1.5 inch foam ready to glue to the underside of the top. I have closed off the locker door but can reopen to make it easier to add the foam. I do not plan to add any to the sides or bottom. I will improve the insulation and seal of the top opening door. Then I can finally finish installing the A/B refrigeration that has been in my basement for six months. I have delayed acting on this because I also have a 110AC dorm fridge where the oven was. It only draws 3 DC amps per hour(10 amps when running) so that has been adequate.

How well insulated is a relative term.

Ed: I think that well insulated is a relative term. I would think that 4" of foam would be well insulated, 6" would be very well insulated. Unless you have these type of volumes or have that new wiz-bang vacuum panels you probably need more. I know I never have enough (that is what she says anyway).

Agreed Steve.

More is definitely better. But it can only go inside and will take away from the volume. My condensor/freezer sits on the shelf that Debra mentioned. It will not fit if I use a thicker insulation. I'll know better I guess when I see how many amp-hours she consumes. Nice feature of the Link 2000, I can easily track it.

Vertical evaporator in the deep section

Instead of the horizontal I went with the vertical evaporator. in the deep section. The shelf is handy for short items that I don't want to be lost in the bottom, and the beer/soda usually ends up where the block of ice would have been. I see your point about the top and will add more in the interior top. I have added some, but it clearly isn't enough. My plans - very tentative - are to add insulation to that soda/beer can shelf, block it in with some fiberglass and paint with gelcoat for waterproofing. The shelf isn't needed and I think it is a section near the hull with not enough insulation. -- probably added by a "designer" who thought it was a marketing coup.
