We have a 1991 Hunter 37.5 and have just bought a Simpson Lawrence Sprint 1000 windlass. Has anyone out there installed a similar windlass in a 37.5? I would love to discuss the installation details such as how the chain fall was led, where the wiring was run, where the windlass was located, any problems encountered along the way, installation photographs, etc. Bud Cook 203-245-2555

Similar install

Bud, I have a '93 37.5 that came with a Simpson-Lawrence Anchorman 1000. I can't tell you about the installation problems but can tell you how it was installed. It is wired directly to the house bank through a 50 amp pushbutton breaker in the starbord cockpit laserette. The breaker is mounted next to the AC shore power connector. Wiring is between the hull and the pan on the starboard side and is "0" gauge. (I think if I were to do it I'd use "1/0" instead). The windlass is mounted in the center of the foredeck the motor goes through the headliner and is finished in a teak and laminate box. My boat has a custom anchor platform that holds two anchors. A friend has a 37.5 with the stock offset roller and his windlass is mounted offset to starboard. The chain fall is just around the windlass and back into the anchor locker (mine is divided with one side for each anchor rode). The only problem is that the arrangement is not "self-tailing" in that you have to pull the chain/rope into the locker as it comes off the windlass. Otherwise it works great. Jim "Prospect"

windlass

i installed a lofrans on my 89 35.5, i off set the windlass to line up with the stock anchor roller, then centered the up down buttons. the chain feeds into the deck right down to the anchor well. the deck has an overhang on the corners that allow for this, i did no modifications to the anchor locker, in fact you have total use of the hatch without chain interference. one of the nice things is that i can use my forward cleat to secure the line when i set the anchor. the motor is hidden in the cupbord right behind my anchor locker. the hardest part of the project was running the wireing aft. i used a 100 amp circut braker with 2/0 wireing, everything works great.

Windlass in a Legend 37

This weekend is my "install the windlass" project. My intention is to install the windlass directly behind the anchor roller. I will be installing a Lofran windlass and have the road and chain feed directly into the anchor locker. I probably install a PVC pipe to direct the feeding of the road and chain into the center of the locker. I would expect that once installed I would not have handle the road and chain other then to secure the road to a cleat once it is set. According to the marine electricial if I mount a battery next to the windlass the heavier cable to the windlass would be very short and then have a smaller cable from the battery charger to the windlass battery. I don't think the added weight of the battery would make much difference since the fresh water tank is in the V Birth. I do have a question: Did you install a piece of stainless steel sheet between the anchor roller and the windlass to protect the deck should the chain rub on the deck?

windlass 35.5

i have installed 1/4 in stainless plate between my windlass and the anchor roller, not for the anchor rub (wasnt a factor with 3 ft of distance between the two) but for better security of the chain stopper, having a plate thier is a good idea.

windlass again

i also looked into a pipe to direct the line to the center of the locker, after investigating the situation i came to the conclusion the the locker wasnt deep enough for auto feed, and i would have to adjust the line anyway. it is real easy with my setup, i set on the edge of the locker (hatch open) and hit the switches the one hand and push the line back with the other, this way when i do lower my anchor i know the line will not be tangled. you might have a better idea then i had so let us know how it worked.

measurements

Could you give me an idea how far behind the chain locker the windlass is mounted for the offset instalation.. also did he have to modify the anchor roller at all to make the offset system work.. Thanks Mike
