Hello, everyone. Has anyone replaced the clam shell vent for the holding tank vent? Mine is behind the d/c panel and just out of reach. I think mine is blocked. Every time I flush, the stink eminates from behind the panel. As a total idiot move, I was commissioning the head for the season and managed to blow a whole bunch of urine stink water out of the vent hose and behind the d/c panel rather than overboard. That's why I think it is blocked.

Thanks, ben.

Replace the clamshell with a mushroon thruhull. No screen to clog up that way. While you're in there, move up to a larger vent hose/fitting.

I hear what you are saying, but I can't reach it. Did you relocate yours?

I replaced the vent thruhull with one that was close to the old one this winter and also replaced the vent line itself. I removed the front of my DC panel and then I could reach in and remove the vent pipe and thruhull.

Thank you! That's what I thought would have to be done. How did you seal the old one closed? Also, what did you use for sealant for the new one? 4200 or 5200 or something like that?

I managed to overfill the holding tank and it spilled back behind the d/c panel. I spent two hours with a shop vac. :(

Thanks,
Ben

When I replaced the vent. I put it back in the same hole as it was in before. I found a vent that was the same size as the one there before. I used 4200 to seal around the vent in the hull. If you use 5200 you will never get it out again if you need to remove it with out damaging the hull of the boat.
I also replaced the hose the goes from the tank to the vent. It's hard to get back to the fitting on the tank but I think it maybe worth it if you had stuff inside of it.

I agree with you. I actually want to replace all the hoses. I also think my through hull to the discharge is clogged, too. I was trying to flush fresh water in the holding tank, and then out.....that's how I ended up pressurizing the tank and blowing the water behind the d/c panel. So.....I think the discharge hose is clogged too. I have visions of heading south in the ocean, and I want to be able to drain the holding tank using the through hull waste discharge hose and diaphragm pump.

I guess I am going to have to place the D/C panel inside that shelf, and carefully lean in. Was there a threaded nut on the clamshell, and did you have to do anything special to get it out besides unscrew it?

Thanks,
Ben

Over the winter I replaced all of the hoses in the bathroom and installed a pump and 2 Y values. This way I can pump out my own tank or have it pumped out at a marina. The other Y value allows me to pump into the tank or over the side when I am off shore. Its a lot of work in the small space but I think it worth the trouble. Both Y values have locks on them so I can lock them in position that way they can't be changed without me knowing. Had someone change it before by mistake and then my holding tank filled without me know.

On the back of the vent it is just a threaded nut and it came off really easy for me. Once I took the nut off the vent fell out. All of the sealant was dried out was not holding it in place or sealing it very good.

When I was upgrading the hoses I also ran water lines back to the transom and installed a deck shower. I just put a T value in the pipes that when to the bathroom sink.

Todd,

Thank you sooooo much! That is a big help. I am going to do this ASAP. Did you also replace the toilet, too? I figure if I am going to do all the plumbing, why not put in a full size toilet. I have a jabsco mini, and was going to upgrade to the full size figuring that the bolt pattern would match the base.
