H27 to H36, been there, done that and am happy
I bought a new H27 in late 1981 and sailed it for over 10 years before selling it and buying a used 1980 H36. The 36 was not in as good of shape as my 27 and still isn't but I am happy with the change. Both boats are good for a couple cruising and perhaps 2 small children.Day sailing with 6 to 8 adults is fine. The 36 tracks and balances under sail much better than the 27 and does not have the weather helm that my 27 had.Under power the 36 handles better and to me is easier to dock etc. These changes are,I think, due to the 36's greater draft, waterline length, power, and greater distance from the keel to the rudder.Of course, the 36 is faster. If you can sail and maneuver a H27 then you should be able to skipper the 36. You should have the boat surveyed and watch for blistering in the hull, delamination of the deck and general condition of the sails and rigging and engine. A problem in these areas may not be a deal breaker, but you want to know if there are any problems on the frontend. I am told that Hunter stopped making the 36 after they introduced the 34 because the 34 supposedly " slept more people", which in my opinion is not the most important criteria for selecting a boat.I am happy with my 36 ,it sails better ,it is more comfortable,I don't have a ton of money in it,and I personally think it has very attractive traditional lines and is one of the best looking boat that Hunter has made.I realize that my last comment may be subject to critism from other non-H36 owners. If I can help you out in any other way please let me know.
