What did you guys do about the absolutely massive, uninsulated icebox in front of the batteries?

It takes up so much space and is pretty useless as it stands - did anyone convert it to anything else? Or maybe shrink it and add insulation?

The box is big, no doubt. I added an Isotherm dc unit. A smaller area would be more efficient, but it has served us well for 19 months of full time cruising, with no additional insulation.

Refrigeration is the number one reason that cruisers have large battery banks, solar panels, wind generator, and a Honda generator for back-up.

In the end I ended up getting an Engel Fridge/Freezer

I mounted it at the gallery end of the single berth, and cut down the cushions to fit around it, so it's more of a 'love seat' now :)

If needed the unit can be moved and the cushion replaced for a bed.

The icebox I'm going to cut a hole in the front, put in a cupboard door and use it for dry food storage.
