I am a sailing rookie and just bought a 07 Hunter 36. I am having trouble outhauling my main with the outhaul and furling lines. It takes me over 5 minutes of hard labor vs. the Hunter videos that show it being done in 20 seconds? Is there something very obvious that I am doing wrong?
Thanks

Azdawgfan, we have a 41 and I can say that I have NEVER done it in 20 seconds. Not certain what, or who, was doing it but I would like to know their secret. I believe my times are usually in the 3-5 range so you may be in the ball park. So that being said it may also be the way you are furling the sail in that is causing the problems coming out. If you do not have a slight port tack it might not be going in tight enough which makes it more difficult to withdraw from the mast. Next time you furl in make sure you are not luffing the main and see it that helps. The other thing you can look at is the pre-bend. If there is to much pre-bend it can cause issues with the main as it is being drawn in and out. However from your post it sounds like it is just an outhaul issue.

BTW we had a 33 and then got a 41 and the furling time for the 41 is a bit more than the 33. If I am in a hurry I am huffing and puffing when done. I bought a Winchrite but found it really does not improve the time any but it does reduce the huffing and puffing. However I don't use it very often because it is loud.

Congratulations on the new boat. You will love it. We nearly got one but went a bit bigger because the Admiral wanted more room!

Big Problem

If you are having touble furling maybe you are not furling it tight as you need to do as you furling in is put a slight tension on the the outhaul as you furling into the mast so it wraps around very tightly into the mast and than it should furl out very easy.
Or as mentioned on port tack on my 07 h-36.

I never timed myself, but my sail comes out in less than 20 seconds
Yeah,, misunderstanding...No problem with coming out Ron. Yeah you are right depending on whether I let it fly out it will take me way less than 20 sec. I was thinking of furling in.

Thanks for the great information folks. I actually remember the surveyor furling the main on the starboard side in heavy winds. After bringing the sail all the way out and back in correctly, it is still not going to come out in less than five minutes.
The boat has very few hours on it so I am going to put some dry lube (McLube Sailkoat) on the track. Sometimes no use is worse than lots of hours? If that doesn’t help, I may have one of the local sail riggers take a look. After four shoulder surgeries, I may buy a Winchrite too.
Again, thanks for your comments and advice folks. I’ll take any and all additional advice, too. It is greatly appreciated. Once I get this mainsail outhaul taken care of, I can start to perfect may single handed docking in wind. Yikes!
Take care.

We have a 2003 H356 (very similar to your boat) and, while I have never timed it, I think that it takes about a minute to furl the main. The information in the previous posts is right on and I would like to add some additional insights. Make sure that the reefing winch control lever is in the proper positioin. Make sure that all rope clutches are fully open if they need to be open for furling. Make sure that the lube points at the base of the furler are indeed lubed. All of this is covered in the Selden portion of the commisioning manual. If you continue to have problems, contact Selden at 843-760-6278 which is the last number I have for them or at www.seldenmast.com.

Azdawgfan, one further item. Did you buy the boat completely rigged? Have you ever completely removed the sail yet? If not you might want to remove the sail and operate the furler without the sail on it. If it is still very tough then it just may be the bearings for the furler. I would not expect that putting the sailcoat on it would do much but while you are doing that it would be a good opportunity to check the bearings. Did the PO change the endless line? They may have put in a larger or smaller line then specified?

Also the advice on checking the operation of the clutches is good. Make sure they are completely opened. Make sure the lever on the mast is completely opposite of the the "manual" position. You may want to operate the furler from the mast just to make sure that it is not your clutches or line.

Lastly, when all else fails, as posted above, contact Selden. I found them quite helpful!

Good luck to you! When was the last time you went out? When did you take possession?

Thanks again folks, more great stuff. I have made a pretty good list of things to check out and do. One of the great things about having problems, when you are a rookie, is the knowledge you start to build.
Nodak, I've owned the boat for about a month and I was out two days ago. Cold but fun.
Take care
