Hi everyone, I’m looking to buy a hunter 356 (exciting!) and it doesn’t have a windlass. The current owner just upgraded to a 45lb anchor and I love having oversized gear but want to fit a windlass.

Anyone got experience fitting a windlass to the 356? I’d imagine a horizontal Lewmar windlass like the RX2+ would do the job but thought I’d ask.

thanks!

First thing we require are pictures of your anchor locker to see what windlass will fit in it.

I installed a Lewmar V-1 in my '99 H-310 and I suspect the anchor lockers are similar, perhaps with yours being a little bigger. The installation of a windlass in a Hunter is seamless as there's no corrosion on the drive motor. I've seen a few other windlasses where the motor is installed within the anchor locker and they're a basketball sized ball of rust. Hard to see how they still operate.

I put V3 on my 410. You might want a V2 with a 45# anchor. Contact Lewmar.

lewmar should be able to tell you the correct model = the 356 needs a special low profile model.
the original model used was from Simpson-lawrence (now lewmar), model 0045700 with gypsy and drum or gypsy only model 0045800. installation is fairly straightforward on the shelf at the back of the anchor locker; you cut out the circular molded spot in the locker cover to clear the drum.
You'll love the 356! We've owned Escape for 20 years now
