Developed transmission failure on 2003 Hunter 356. Won't shift/stay in gear. Kanvaki Model KN 2P-1 transmission, Yanmar 27 HP 3YM diesel, 1900 hours. Other owners experienced such problem? Rebuild, Replace?

Unusual!

Tom:

I am thinking that this is a somewhat unusual problem. I don't remember having heard of the problem very much on this site.

I would suggest that you try removing your current shift lever and hook one up directly to the tranny. Then have someone below to operate it as needed for your testing.

If everything works okay you are probably looking at an adjustment to the linkage. If not, then you will probably need to get the assistance of a pro.

Pro Advice

Thanks for the quick reply. I didn't mention that my Hunter 356 has been in charter service since new, with approx 1900 hours. My maintenance professional has attempted several adjustments of the linkage with only limited, short term success. He is talking rebuild or replace options. Information on the Kanzaki is quite limited (I'm finding) - a wholly owned subsidary of Yanmar. I'll pass on your suggestions and see where we go from there. I'm using a 'borrowed' transmission at the moment (another Hunter 356) but need to resolve this soon.

Thanks, Tom

Tom,

I had to replace the transmiossion in my 420 2 years ago. Engine (4JH2) and trans had about same hrs as yours.
Also have a good friend with an '02 380 who has just finished having his transmission removed and rebuilt at Mac Boring.
The problem is not that unusual...
Rebuild or replace??? I tried the rebuild route only to have the transmission still not work and had to purchase a new one.
380 friend seems to be having good luck w/ rebuild.
You'll save almost $K w/ rebuild, but how long will it last ??

Tranny symptoms?

What symptoms does the trans show just before "going out"?
Coming back from a cruise this weekend we were 2 hours into it when a noticable CLUNK occured! This was followed by vibration and loss of power. I was able to continue at almost same RPM but a min. of 1 knot less speed - and still a vibration.

Coming into the slip, I creep in slowly, put it into Reverse (no noticable clunk sound -hmmm?) Give it more gas and she is not slowing down! After tie up I put her into Reverse again and she churns backwards but will not "dig in" like usual.

I plan to inspect the prop to see if all's well there first. Then what? Tranny or linkage or ??

Do these symptoms match with any you guys had when your trans finally gave out?

Probably a Hit

Dan: Thanks for your note. I am not aware of any "clunk" with my transmission issue, but then much of the problem has developed while the boat has been out on charter. However, I did have a problem last year with a broken strut and a bent shaft. Suspicion was that it was probably due to a "hit" while the boat was underway. Hunter's view was that there has been no history of broken struts but that a piece of driftwood (or similar) would cause a loud thud and would potentally throw the shaft off. After about 3 weeks the strut apparently went, probably due to the impact plus vibration etc. I think I would check your prop first, then investigate the shaft/strut.
