Just bought a 1988 Hunter 35 Legend. Trying to figure out PHRF rating. Winged keel. Our local listing shows 2 versions. Any ideas?

Your rating is determined by the local PHRF committee but those numbers posted by jdhohmann are very representative of these boats. Don't forget that there are many factors that make up your final rating, prop type, largest headsail, spinnaker pole size, crew weight, just to name a few.

Take the higher number! Every venue is going to have a different number, but if you have a choice, take the higher number.

Go Hunters,
John

Hello Mark,
Sounds like you're from across the pond, maybe Scotland? Although Hunter Marine is the builder, I believe the Legend 36 you are talking about is the Hunter 36 in the US. If you could include a picture we could verify this so we are all working on the same page. The latest US version Hunter 36 has a B&R rig with no backstay and most have in-mast furling. These boats are not designed for, IMHO anything other than 'fair weather' sailing. Their design suffers from a lack of sail controls that are needed for the type of sailing conditions you outline. Admittedly, the skipper and crew have much to do with how a boat is handled but this design makes things far more difficult to deal with for the sake of 'owner conveniences'.

I have read previous posts that suggest adding 8 for a furler and a 4 for a 3 blade prop, are these on the mark ? The highest 35 base rating I have seen is 144 for our boats

Paul, the additions to the rating for a three blade non feathering prop can be 12 seconds but it is not nearly enough compared to real loss of performance. A three blade prop equates to dragging a bucket while sailing.
