Does anyone know what the Hunter 35.5 typically rates PHRF and/or Portsmouth Yardstick...
What years was the boat built?
What are the major differences between it and my 356?

L35.5 PHRF's out at 132 to 144 depending on your local committee. The Portsmouth Yardstick rating is 93.7 average rating (Portsmouth varies its ratings based on wind speed) The 356 and 355 are completely different hull and rig designs though they share the same LOA. The L35.5 was introduced in 1989 and ended in 1995. The L35 was its predecessor which ran 1988 - 1989. The 35 and 35.5 shared the same hull and rig design with the major changes on the interior.

Interesting.
I am looking at this after RichH's post of the USSA site for the Portsmouth Yardstick. I was checking our local fleet's boats against the yardstick as kind of a reality check. They don't rate the 356 and therefore I looked at the 35.5. I was stunned at the rating.
I've compared the specifications and there isn't much of a difference. The 356 actually has a longer water line, more sail area and about 900 lbs more displacement, greater draft and more ballast. So, it must be the rig and hull shape that account for a rating of 183 for the 356 and 131 for the 35.5.
Is the 35.5 a B&R rig? Is the 131 number for spinnaker? What jib is that 131 number for?

I checked the PHRF rating for a 356 and it comes in around 145. The 183 rating you are showing is totally unrealistic in my opinion. PHRF ratings are always given in 'race ready' condition. This means a 150-155 headsail, folding/feathering prop, empty tankage and a standard spinnaker setup. Some fleets will give a separate rating for JAM (jib and main) but those ratings wont vary too much from the normal rating. The important factor in ratings is not the total number but the difference between ratings numbers of different boats.

BTW I made HUGE error in the Portsmouth rating of the 35.5. It is rated 76.8 not the 93.7 I first reported. Sorry for the error, I was trying to remember the number but CRS sometimes raises its ugly head. You can convert PHRF to Portsmouth using the formula :
DPN = (PHRF/6) + 55

This would yield a DPN number of 79.2 for the 356 with a PHRF of 145

PS, no the 35.5 is not a B&R rig, but the 356 certainly does have one.
