Peggie, I am replacing the aluminum holding tank, toilet and hoses on my H35.5 this winter. In a recent post, you recommended replacing the stock Jabsco on an H34 with a Raritan PHC toilet. Do the mounting holes in the Raritan PHC match the ones that hold the Jabsco? The pics on the Raritan web site show a cover which hides the mounting hardware.

Mounting bolt patterns rarely match,

Even on newer versions of the same make/model toilet as the old one. So that should never be a consideration in choosing a new toilet. Just fill the old holes--even any that do match up, to be sure the mounting bolts have something to get a good "bite" into, so the toilet won't wobble--and touch up any that aren't covered with paint or gelcoat.

Jabsco toilet/aluminum holding tank

I replaced my aluminum holding tank with a plastic one and replaced the toilet with the std. jabsco toilet. The jabsco is so inexpensive - $100 - and changing it so easy. Thus, the Jabsco cost/benefit is much better than any other models, that would involve much more work for the installation. The jabsco is working fine after 2 years of operation. For further info email me at dbftours@adelphia.com

It depends on how you define cost/benefit

$100 for a new toilet every 5 years or so (I've heard of people replacing the pump EVERY year rather than deal with trouble-shooting it)...or $250 for a new toilet that will provide 20-25 years of trouble-free service if just marginally maintained--kept lubricated and rebuilt ($40 current list price) every 5 years or so. Granted, it may be easier to just pull out and replace a whole toilet than rebuild one, but seems to me that's a very expensive approach to toilet maintenance....kinda like taking taxis all the time 'cuz it's less trouble than owning a car.

Jabsco has NO benefit.

I would have to disagree about a Jabsco having any cost benefits. We have one sailor that has spent about $600 (his name will not be used again within the same week) on a Jabsco. Everyone seems to have a different take on this problem. It is sort of like batteries. Do I want to be messing around putting new batteries in my boat every two years or do I want to do it once every 10 years. My idea is to purchase a quality item and have it last. I would rather pay for Gel or AGM batteries once every 10 years than have to worry about the damn things going out every other year. The same goes for a toilet. Get something good like the PHII. Works better 5 years from the time you install it than a Jabsco will work when it is new. And you know the price is only about twice as much $220 - $275 for a new PHII v.s. $125 for the Jabsco.

Peggy, your one comment

"kinda like taking taxis all the time 'cuz it's less trouble than owning a car." If you are a New Yorker that statement is actually VERY true. So I guess for some people it "may" be easier to just pull out and replace a whole toilet than rebuild one. FYI - 4 years and my jabsco and its still working ok. My biggest problem is the pump sticking often (Yes, I have lubed it with teflon grease a few times so far this year) No I don't love the Jabsco and I probably would rather have a different model, but it works and it would much more of a hassle for me to replace it with a different model.

SHAME ON YOU PEGGY

For years now i have read and listened to your suggeations about head maintance. But to stoop so low to include a COMMERCIAL LINK to your book on the bottom of every response you make is in my opinion a hit below the belt. We all know that you are now a famous author that wants to promot your book but maybe a better way would be to attend the GAMM being held at the SSCA meeting in melbourne fla in november rather than trying to sell it here and elsewhere on the sailnet sponsored FREE PAGES. FWIW

I've been invited to give a seminar at SSCA GAMM

in Melbourne next month...I hope you'll attend. And my publisher (Seaworthy Publications) has a booth there again as usual, so I'll be there for most of it. If you're gonna complain, it helps if you get your facts straight. This site isn't sponsored by sailnet, nor is it associated in any way with sailnet...it's owned by sailboatowners.com. Although my book is available from a number of sources, the only link to it that I post here goes to the sailboatowners.com online store here. Although I do get a royalty from my publisher for each copy they sell, it's very small--only about $1.00. People who buy it from the store here are helping to support this site...the sbo.com chandlery is the source for the money it takes to keep this site up and running so you can have the benefit of participating here for free. I suggest you see what else is available there...not only my book, but many things you prob'ly need. If you've buying from sailnet, shame on YOU for supporting the competion while enjoying this site for free! :))

Chill out, Chet

Peggy helps hundreds of people a year for free on this website. She never says "there are details of how to fix your problem in my book." She just gives it up, no charge. Blow it out your sanctimonious ear. Paul sv Escape Artist h336

I agree with Paul

Both Peggy and sailboatowners give a lot to this website The effort put forward by Peggie, BLy and Phil is absolutely astounding . Maybe your type of attitude belongs to sailnet but not here where everybody gives willingly

Chill Chet

Peggy is a gem. She has helped many of us for absolutely nothing. To suggest purchasing her book in her response to questions is nothing more than a suggestion of convenience given that it pulls all the wisdom she has shared over the years that is on this site today into one nice compact location. Get it for free here by doing a bit of work yourself OR buy her book where she has done the work for you!

gives it away for free!

Wow! Many times after the publication of her book I wondered why she continues to give away, on this website, almost everything that is in the book and go out of her way to answer specific questions that might not be covered. Just the advice from her posts is worth the price of the book. A rare service and she deserves the link. Besides, you don't have to click it!

Why do I do it?

Several reasons: Your questions keep me current on problems and issues. I collect the questions and answers that aren't covered in my book to include in a "2nd edition revised expanded" (if there ever is one). I don't give away EVERYthing in my book, just enough to solve the immediate problem. My book provides a lot more information than would even be practical to post. Plus, most problems happen when you're aboard away from the dock and can't go online to ask for help. That's what the book is for...to keep on the boat to help you solve problems immediately. Btw...I'm not famous yet, but I'm workin' on it. :) Y'all can help by telling all your friends about my book...you'll also be helping to support sailboatowners.com. Meanwhile, thanks for the kind words!

Peggy you keep write on!

Peggy, I have purchased and read your book. I refer to it over and over. I also follow these discussions closely I am glad that you continue to post and give good advice to us sailors. As far as putting your link to your book in every response, you keep right on doing it. Thats what prompted me to finally buy your book! If you write another one I will buy that one as well.

If you want to really have fun!

Take Peggie out to dinner and watch what time you get home! Then wake up and wonder why your ribs ache - from laughing so much. Cheers Peggie. Hey what time did you finally get to bed Monday night? Jim S/V Java

P

Peggie Hall/HeadMistress

We DID have a good time! :)

Thanks for dinner! If I'd known you were buying, I'd have ordered the lamb chops! :) Taking me home to Kent Narrows was above and beyond...I owe you a big one! The crowd finally cleared out of the boat after the football game ended sometime after midnight...I was not a happy camper (and "camper" is NOT a figure of speech!). Watch your email for details.

Wondering

Seriously considering replacing my small holding tank on my Pearson 35. Any advice and details on suppliers? Thanks, Rotor
