I just purchased a Hunter 340 and I noticed that the steering wheel is not parallel with the face of the fiberglass console. It is almost half an incn closer on the starboard side of the console. This is translating to very tiny clearance for the autopilot drive. The wheel is also very close to the housing and the previous owner used washers to move the wheel away which means very few threads are keeping the wheel attached on the hub.

How difficult is it to realign the console? Is this an issue with my boat or have others seen this?

Half an inch offset is not much but the fact that the console is to close to the wheel may indicate the console was accidentally pushed back by a very heavy impact. Check and see how the console attaches to the steering pedestal and to the cockpit sole. Wether brackets or tubing see if anything is bent and figure out what it would take to push the entire unit back a couple of inches.

Pedestal mounting

Take out the pedestal drink holder and then remove the deep storage bin. You can then look down inside the pedestal for screws and/or bolts that hold it to the cockpit sole. The entire top of the pedestal is held on by only a few screws and can be moved aside for some additional access to the inside. There is an overhead panel in the aft cabin berth that MAY also give some limited access to the underside mounting of the pedestal.
