I recently purchased a Hunter 340 and on the trip home from San Diego the mainsheet let go. It shattered at the point where the sheet enters the bottom of the boom, due to chaffing. The mainsheet runs through the boom and one end of the sheet is now stuck inside the boom. Apparently, the sheet is knotted inside the boom so it will not allow me to pull the old sheet out from the mast-end of the boom. Is there a special tool or technique for removing the shattered remains of the sheet from the boom?

The boom end assembly can be unscrewed to access to have better view of inside the boom. Knot in mainsheet inside boom is not normal. You have to use an electrician fish-tape (I think that's what its called) to lay new messenger line to pll new mainsheets through boom. You probably have an outhaul block inside the boom to get in your way, so tension the outhaul taut to clear it off bottom of boom for you to work your magic. Good luck. :)
