Hunter 340 Engine Control Panel

Just purchased a 1998 Hunter 340. I'm not sure how the panel is supposed to operate and I am looking for some assistance. I can't find a wiring diagram or instructions for the panel.

When the key is turned on the oil and battery lamps light. The Temp lamp doesn't light. When the toggle switch is pushed to the right, the temp lamp lights and the other lamps stay light. The buzzer never sounds off.

Can someone describe how the panel is supposed to work and perhaps provide a diagram of the wiring.

Thanks,
George

Sounds like the lamps are working fine. Test switch lights all lamps.. Key on, lights oil and charge light and should sound horn. Starting engine should silence horn and all lamps should be off. Sounds like your horn has failed. Some horns have two connections.. if you are lucky, that is the one you have.. some horns have 5 connections and are pretty expensive.. There have been posts on this site showing wiring to enable use of an inexpensive horn http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062400
to replace the Yanmar one.

Thanks kloudie, I'll check out the radioshack solution for the horn.

So the temp lamp shouldn't light when I turn on the key? It should only light when I toggle the test mode. Correct?

Buzzer

That is correct. The horn should sound when the test switch is pushed and the lamps light. Since you don't have an overheat, you won't get that alarm at start-up. Here is a diagram

EDIT: The cheapie horn will require some diodes and some modification to work. If you search this site with "Warning buzzer" you should find a post or two showing the diode mods.

georgewd, not sure if your 98 has the same panel as our 99, but our buzzer seems to fail every 5-8 years. The panel is made by Seaward but the buzzer is Intervox part number BRP4535S-24, which I last bought online from Allied Electronics for about $7 apiece plus shipping. You should be able to confirm yours by removing the panel and looking for markings on the buzzer. When you reinstall, don't overtighten the screws or you could crack the panel.

Thanks for all the info. The 99 panel is the same one on my 98. I'll dig into the panel this weekend and try to replace the buzzer.

What do you mean by since you don't have an overheat

I have a 1999 340 with the same setup. I just decided to leave the horn inoperative. It has been my experience that by the time the lights and horn sound off, it is to late to do anything about it. I installed engine, oil, and voltage Gauges for the motor on the port side of the helm below the wheel for the auto pilot and a voltage gauge for the house bank on the starboard side just across from the other 3. I have made a habit of scanning them every 10 minutes or so while underway. This way I can pick up on trends and take any necessary actions before its to late.
