I have a 1984 hunter 34. Can any one tell me what the purpose of the small compartment that is between the dorades and the mast. It is not water proof, and has a cheap latch, so I was wondering what the designers had in mind when the molded it into the deck.

Not sure but I have had two thoughts 1) a winch handle if you had a winch on the mast - not sure since my H34 lines all go aft to the cockpit. 2) for sail ties so they are there when you go back up and bring down the sail.

Dorade box cubby...

I don't put anything in there as it eventually gets full of water that doesn't drain and becomes an algae lab experiment.

I loop my sail ties on the hoop over the dorade vents themselves (Nicro solars on my boat), making them easy to grab in a hurried sail drop.

Ditto on my boat Re the algae lab experiment LOL. I have been thinking about closing it permanently with fiberglass. I don't use sail ties. I have mounted a bungee cord the full length of the boom with 4 knots and 4 small plastic hooks. It always stays in place and I don't have to look for ties or a place to store them.

Here you go Ed, with the hope that you can enlarge the pictures as they were not made for that purpose. I have also attached a drawing which I hope will help you understand. don't hesitate to get back with questions.

Hey, thanks. I figured maybe for sail ties, but like all have said, you can not leave anything in it since the box does not drain.
I like the idea about the bungie cords. That would keep them handy, and you don't have to worry about dropping them in the wind when taking down the sail.
Thanks again for the replies.

Thanks Claude.... I might just steal your idea... Are the hooks attached to the boom or just to the bungee? Ed H

You welcome to it Ed. Hooks are attached to the bungee. One per loop, with hook facing up when attached to other side. Knots are generally under the boom but will ride up on either side now and then when bungee is stretched. Look again at the pdf dwg and it should should help. When sail is up, the entire thing just hangs below the boom as it is then only attached to the topping lift holder and the gooseneck.
