Hi;
1986 Hunter 34;
Would like to replace wheel with a smaller diameter wheel; is very hard to get around. Is the hub and spline size standard to wheel manufacturers? If not which will fit?

Thanks in advance. Ilan

what kind of pestial do you have edson has a 1 inch shaft as does ys....some have a tapered shaft and so on you will have to pull the wheel a measure the shaft to find out ....you can shop for something like this unless you know what you are looking for ..so a little research on your part will make it a little easier

True, the wheel is a bit awkward to get around sometimes, but I would hate to lose the leverage and exhaust myself trying to maintain a course. If you think a couple inches doesn't matter, try taking the tire off your car with a shorter wrench.

The biggest problem i would have with a smaller wheel is the long reach for the wheel when you are sitting far enough to the side to see the telltales.

Shaft is a 1" straight shaft with a keyway (Be sure to check yours before ordering)..so a hub that matches that is what ya need. The front-to-back length of the hub is really important, and I don't have that info at hand. Soooo if ya really want a smaller wheel one that satisfies the shaft fit will work. The folding one may be a way to get ease of access when at anchor and still retain the ability to steer while way outboard watching traffic and teltails.. Lewmar makes a good one.
Another option is to have a quick release nut and a bracket to mount the wheel on the pulpit when at anchor.

I have pulled the wheel but have not measured the shaft: people talk about edson and the other brand the 34s used but I wouldn't know which they're talking about based on the dimensions. If I could tell which was which I know the wheels available usually specify which brand mount they'll go on. Ilan

Thought maybe I could knock 2 or 3 inches off and get away with it!

Your pedestal is probably a Merriman Yacht Specialties pedestal. The wheels that have a 1" straight shaft with 1/4" keyway will fit.. Be careful of the "dish" in the wheel.. that is the offset between rim and hub..

I purchased a new wheel @ defender which was 2" smaller in diameter. It's a million time better though it is not as easy to steer while sitting in the corner... I've been learning to steer with my feet while sitting there.....

Hate to ask; what make wheel size and hub type (straight or taper)? Thanks. Ilan

it was a 36" I don't think this is it, since the price I paid was less than 1/2 what they are showing for item 001600 , http://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?path=-1|2331321|2331322|2331331&id=80024

but this is what the email said...

Item Information Item Number Item Description Quantity Ordered Quantity Back Ordered Unit Price Total Price
001600 Steering Wheel 1 0 $214.99 $214.99

This was back in 2012.

It was an exact fit for the Edson binnacle that I have. I'll see if I can see any more info when I look at the wheel.

I've attached a couple of picture of the wheel.. You can see the extra room. There was no information on the wheel to indicate manufacturer.... but as you can see there are 6 spokes. -Jon

Use that and a maroon scotch brite pad and then fog it with some boing shield or the like
