Hunter 34 transom step

Any comments and or concerns on what might/could happen if I were to modify my 1984 Hunter 34 transom to achieve the recessed platform very similar to this? Odyssey II (O'Day 31) is stored right next to my boat and got me to thinking. I've seen the sugar scoop mod on the forum and some really bad add ons on other boats here in Rhode Island but this seems to be the answer. I've boarded and swam off of Odyssey many times and it is so much easier than boarding my boat via the factory installed ladder. The distance from both rudder posts to the trailing end of the transom is within 1" of each other. Other than the boat "tilting", lack of a swim platform is one of top complaints I get from the admiral. Thank you, Randy Church s/v Mental Floss

A couple of things to look at. 1 there is a water tank back there that would have to be removed. 2 the fuel tank is pretty close but could be changed if it restricted this mod. As you say the rudder post is close.
I've been thinking about a platform that would clip onto the steps and have cables running to either the toe-rail or back stay attachments. When not in use it could go down into the pit. Are you planning on a DIY or hiring this out. Either way keep us up to date.
Thanks

Well, it doesn't appear to be much of a platform. Would the admiral be satisfied with that? I, myself, am interested in the sugar scoop transom if funds become available which would provide more surface and not affect the structural integrity of your boat in addition to the water tank.
What about a couple of fold down platforms on either side of the ladder with railings running up to the outboard stanchion bases?

I think I would go with some kind of fold down swim platform. Much easier and less expensive.

I kinda liked the sugar scoop that was floating around here a couple months ago. I don't know what happened to that but I'm sure it's way more than I want to spend, too many other things my boat wants.

I agree a fold down affair would be fairly simple. There is a guy doing an outstanding rebuild of a Mega 30 that is just finishing up a fold down swim platform with one of those hanging ladders that looks fairly clean.
