Hunter 34 throttle cable replacement information

Had to replace a broken throttle cable a few years ago due to were it attached to the throttle body the old cable had sheered off at the start of the threads. Real pain in the a- - job if anyone has done this on an old Edson pedestal but pretty straightforward job, just time consuming. Ordered a new cable from this site and installed it. Looked identical to the old one except for the broken end. After it was installed and tried to attach the threaded end it to the throttle body arm it was about an inch short. 1st thought was manufacturer cut the threaded end short. Being such a pain in the neck to get it through the pedestal and order a replacement I simply removed it from the cable clip and slid it forward enough to reach the throttle body arm and attached. Done. Now everything hooked back up and working correctly, so I thought. Time to move onto another engine issue but that’s a whole different story.

After a few seasons later and doing some pedestal maintenance and engine repairs I realized that the cable movement at the pedestal arm is longer than the opposite end attached at the engine.:yikes::yikes::yikes:

because on the old cable the threads were broken off I never realized that the two ends were different lengths by approximately an inch. :poop: This is obvious why it was not long enough to reach the throttle body arm. :banghead: Well this explains why the through on the throttle was not operating correctly.
Going to the boat later this week to switch the cable around.

so, if anyone else that has to replace this cable, don’t make the same stupid mistake I did. It’s easy to do if the threaded end is broken off. At a glance both ends look the same. I never thought the ends were different, always thought that the cable adjustment was done at the threads.

Like the old carpenter saying goes “measure twice. Cut once”.
Stupid mistake  and totally avoidable!

I might have made this post premature. Just got replacement throttle cable from this site as a backup just in case things don’t go well with switching the ends.
Ordered the same one a few years ago, so they just looked up my previous order and sent me another. The cable I received today both have identical ends and the travel on both ends are exactly the same. From the clip attachment point is approximately 8-1/2 inches. If my memory is correct I think the one I installed was 6-1/2 or 7-1/2 on the travel of the cable. However I’m not positive. My age is starting to show, my memory is not as good as it used to be:sosad:

Going to have to investigate this a little more. I didn’t think the ends were different when I installed them originally. Now I’m thinking that maybe the cable I installed might have been manufactured incorrectly? Something is definitely not right and I’m going to have to look at this more closely to see what is going on. Hopefully going to be able to get back on the boat this weekend. I will post what I find out soon.

Update,
Installed new throttle cable and confirmed both threaded ends are exactly the same, throw from the connection clip notch was 8-12 inches. Hooked the new cable to the attachment point and it fit perfectly and operates the throttle body absolutely no issues. Pulled the old cable and found it to either be manufactured defective or I was shipped the wrong cable. Old cable one end was crimped short and only allowed the inner cable to travel 7-1/2 from the attachment point and the other end crimped at
8-1/2. Unfortunately both cables were the same length however the ends that were crimped were different. Had the old cable not been broken I probably would have noticed something was wrong.

Called the manufacturer and unfortunately with out the original box they can’t confirm if it was manufactured defective or the wrong cable shipped. They were leaning towards it was defective. They said that the majority of cable of this type have the same travel at both ends. Anyway problem is resolved and only few hours time and a lot of head scratching lost.

for everyone’s information both end are the same and makes no difference what end connects to the throttle body. Just make sure both end have the same travel from the connection points.
