Had to replace a broken throttle cable a few years ago due to were it attached to the throttle body the old cable had sheered off at the start of the threads. Real pain in the a- - job if anyone has done this on an old Edson pedestal but pretty straightforward job, just time consuming. Ordered a new cable from this site and installed it. Looked identical to the old one except for the broken end. After it was installed and tried to attach the threaded end it to the throttle body arm it was about an inch short.
1st thought was manufacturer cut the threaded end short. Being such a pain in the neck to get it through the pedestal and order a replacement I simply removed it from the cable clip and slid it forward enough to reach the throttle body arm and attached. Done. Now everything hooked back up and working correctly, so I thought. Time to move onto another engine issue but that’s a whole different story.
After a few seasons later and doing some pedestal maintenance and engine repairs I realized that the cable movement at the pedestal arm is longer than the opposite end attached at the engine.

because on the old cable the threads were broken off I never realized that the two ends were different lengths by approximately an inch.
This is obvious why it was not long enough to reach the throttle body arm.
Well this explains why the through on the throttle was not operating correctly.
Going to the boat later this week to switch the cable around.
so, if anyone else that has to replace this cable, don’t make the same stupid mistake I did.
It’s easy to do if the threaded end is broken off. At a glance both ends look the same. I never thought the ends were different, always thought that the cable adjustment was done at the threads.
Like the old carpenter saying goes “measure twice. Cut once”.
Stupid mistake
and totally avoidable!
