Hi Guys and Ladies:
I have a 1984 Hunter 34 which I've had for about 5 years. I recently experienced my first issue of malfunction. I have tried to become really familiar with my boat over this short time by exploring. While docking on a finger pier I experienced complete resistance while going in to reverse. However, when I place the shifter in the forward position, it works normally. Question: Is the "shifter" cable one cable or is there a cable for the forward gear and one for the reverse gear. Recent surgery has prevented me from exploring the situation on my own. Can anyone provide knowledge and experience on replacement of the "shifter" cable. I have recently noted that Sailboatowers.com now supplies throttle and shifter cables. Thank you in advance for your knowledge and experience.

It is one cable- take a look at the shifter lever on the port side of your transmission. You can move it from forward thru to reverse by hand at the shifter. You will also see the adjustments there.

Hi Richard,
Thank you for such a quick response. I had been able to see that lever on the port side of the transmission. It is reassuring to know that I maybe able to make an adjustment to resolve the situation. However, I may just go ahead and buy a replacement cable to have on hand….To my knowledge it probably has never been replaced.
Thank you so much.
