Hunter 34 Sea Hood pics

Hello everyone,

I am the owner of a new to me H34. This has been my first season with it and it has been a ton of fun, I am not sure what I like better, working on it or sailing on it. So far I have replaced the head liner with some wainscoting, replaced the intrior lights and I just finished the process of replacing all the ports. I did the NFM thing with the butyle and they are great. Anyway, I thought I stopped all the leaks from the screws from the sea hood, but they have returned. I have done a fair amount of searching and I have found plenty of posts describing the removal of the sea hood and some pics of a H32 sea hood removed, but it seemed all the links with photos for an H34 no longer worked. After replacing all the ports, I think sea hood rebedding is a project I can tackle, I would just like to get an idea of what it looks like under there before I start. So does anyone still have photos of when they removed their sea hood? Thank you in advance.

Don't have pix, but I did mine 9-10 years ago. It was sealed with butyl and required a lot of patience to SLOWLY lever it up from the deck so as to not crack the gell coat. It was not a bad job, but you will need a helper to handle the big piece once ya get it free. It is not heavy, just big.. Get a bunch of butyl and countersink the screw holes in the deck (under the lid) to keep them from leaking again.. Use masking tape to keep the sealant from getting everywhere when you re-install.. If your lexan companionway cover is crazing/cracking, get a new one before ya pull the cover because lifting the cover is the only way to change it.. and ya don't want to lift that cover again.. The traveller screws are threaded into thick aluminum in the deck so they all have to come out.. Get some TefGel for the threads when ya go back up. Be very careful with the two "runners" that extend aft over the companionway sides.. MaineSail posted a great "How To" thread with pictures of the process of countersinking for best sealant performance and the process of rebuilding stripped out holes for the hold-down screws. Because I didn't countersink and I used silicone, mine will have to be removed and re-sealed probably this spring. Good Luck !

I don't have any H34 sea hood pics but do have two of an H31 being redone and attached below. Very similar in size and configuration. Hope it helps.

Getting the screws out of the the traveler can be a real SOB. You will need a BIG screw driver. If you can get one with a square shank you will be able to put a wrench on it to assist you with starting the bolts.

I would use a little sealant around the base of the deck penetrating to prevent water from seeping into the holes.

The above mentioned application of Tef-Gel is mandatory. You can get it from SBO. com store too. I just got a 2 oz. jar for about $27 (call Dave G).
