All,
Decided to replace the 16+ years old standing rigging while the mast is down to be cautious....Admiral is very proud of me as I lean toward the cheap side (-: Removing the 1/2" clevis pin (pretty sure that's what it's called) at the end of the spreaders is a major PITA. Got one of the top ones out by turning/supporting spreader on its' edges and using a hex driver bit, PB Blaster and small sledge hammer. Got it to move slightly in both directions before it decided to continue all the way out. On the next one I tried, got it all the way through 1 side and eyelets of the 3 shrouds and then the other side of the spreader itself broke off with the pin still stuck in it. )-: How would a rigger swinging in a bosun's chair even be able to do this???? Am I doing something wrong?? Has someone in the past installed the wrong pins??? I hope to replace pins with proper fitting stainless bolt and acorn nuts. Any advice out there, especially with removing pins? I should mention it took 30-45 minutes to remove each of the pins.
Thanks,
Randy
