I just purchased a 1981 Hunter 33, equiped with a 15 hp Yanmar diesel, that needs a replacement water heater. The existing heater is not working and does not have a heat exchanger. Product literature for a replacement heater suggests that it should be located at a level below the engine, evidently to ensure discharge water from the engine will flow through the unit. I am concerned because the mounting location for the heater is in the starboard cockpit locker and the heater inlet/outlet for engine water would be mounted slightly above the engine. The ownner's manual I recieved with the boat indicates it was equiped with a heat exchanger when it was built. Can anyone give me advice about a replacement water heater and whether it will work ok given its configuration when installed?

Are you sure?

I have the same boat and it is raw water cooled. If so, You are not going to be making hot water from the engine. What is your engine model # mine is 2GM this is raw water cooled.

Mine too...

Mine is the 2GM, and is raw water cooled, no heat exchanger. Since I am an original owner, I know for a fact that if you have a 2GM engine, it did not come with a heat exchanger. The hot water that came with the boat originally, was of the normal house type, running on 120v shore power with a capacity of about 5 gallons. I replaced mine with a home depot type unit, small, 3.5 or 4 gallons, but fast heating. The replacement was smaller and rectangle plastic case which I relocated to bulkhead dividing the head and the cockpit locker. Mine hangs beside the vertical hard plastic holding tank that replaced the old stink bag holding tank. I think I spent $90 on the new water heater and its been great. I can have hot water in 5 minutes after connecting to shore power. If you try to use the heat exchanger type, that will take a different engine. My Yanmar is 24 years old and still running great, so I'll be heating water at dockside only for a while. One note, heated water will stay hot for hours in the unit I installed.

Holding Tank Type?

David, I am in the process of replacing the "stink bag" on my 1981 H-33. I also want to put a tank vertically adjacent to the head/locker bulkhead. What type and size did you put in? I am hoping tp put one in greater than the 15 gallon bag. Scott

My engine is a Yanmar 2QM15, raw water cooled. The current water heater is not the original. The heat exchanger is part of a marine water heater and would require re-routing the cooling water through the water heater after it goes through the engine. I can replace the heater without connecting the heat exchanger or by picking up small non marine electric unit as has been suggested. However, I like the heat exchanger concept because you can get hot water without shore power.

That may not be the best place for a holding tank

And it can be a LOT harder to eliminate odor in a tall vertical tank than a shallower one. However, you are wise to ditch the bladder for a thick-walled rigid polyethylene tank. I'll be glad to help you spec out a system you'll be happy with if you'd like to email me...I'm in all the owner directories. Meanwhile you might want to check out the link below.

2GM = NO HOT WATER

IF YOU HAVE THE RAW WATER COOLED ENGINE, YOU WILL NOT BE MAKING HOT WATER FROM IT. THE WATER DOES NOT SPEND ENOUGH TIME IN THE MOTOR TO HEAT UP. CALL A YANMAR DEALER FOR VERIFICAION BEFORE YOU SPEND A DIME ON TRYING TO MAKE IT WORK. I REASEARCHED THIS TO DEATH AND IT JUST CAN'T BE DONE. AN ALTERNATE FUEL HEATER IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET HOT WATER OTHER THAN ELECTRIC. MOST ARE EXPENSIVE. SOMEONE HAS AN INTERESTING PROPANE HEATER IN THE PHOTO FORUM ON THIS SITE. THIS IS MOST LIKELY THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK YOUR GOING TO FIND.

Try my solution for hot water

Go to -Message Boards - Hunter Forums - Photo/Project Forum. Change Search by Model to 33_7-83, click -Search-. You'll see my article titled "Hot Showers for Cherubini 33's" which was my solution. Would work with any boat. Or, click the link below. Our heater has worked fine this past year. Recently had the boat surveyed for insurance purposes. The insurance company's surveyor liked what he saw. Also liked the propane locker I had installed. Look for that article in the archives also.

Hey Scott,

Sorry I have not gotten back to you sooner on the holding tank. I have not been on the site for a few days. Peggy responded to your question and I'm sure she will have much better advise than I can give, but, to answer your question. I used a tank I purchased off the shelf from West Marine. It was originally designed to be a fuel tank, but its semi clear material is very thick and it does not seem to have any odor problems. I do keep it treated with chemicals to eliminate odors. All connections are either at the top or towart the top as it stands on it's end. Since I bought this over 20 years ago, I don't have a name brand. What I did do as I made the selection, I choose a tank that seemed to match the same material and thickness as the holding tanks they were selling in the same store. It's probably not the best solution, but it has worked for me. The tank is strapped to the bulkhead of the locker and sits in the same spot as the bladder tank did so I did not have to do major refitting of hoses, thur hulls, etc. I really like what Sam Lust did, that seems really nice. Good luck, David
