Alas, after many long years the Yanmar 2QM20 on "Time-Away" has failed. I need to repower and have many options. Though the Yanmar 3GM30F will certainly fit I would like to go with the 2GM20F as I really need the space and would like some separation between the stuffing and transmission. I will used a three blade prop. Presently I have a 14X8 RH. Any thoughts as to what many of you have done is appreciated, including other than Yanmar.

Steve Weinstein has done this too.

Ed: Steve Weinstein out of NY has done this. I will see if we can get him to give you some feed back.

Been there - Done that

Ed, I did this two years ago and kicked myself for not doing it sooner. I was looking at a $4900 bill for a rebuild on my '81 2QM15 and was quoted $5400 for a brand new 2GM20. A no brainer. My yard charged me about $1800 total for removing the old engine and installing the new one. The GM is almost a perfect drop-in. The width was identical except the 2GM20 is about 6" shorter (and about 75 lbs lighter!). Why don't you send me your email address and I'll give you all the pertinent information about what to expect and what to do beforehand. By the way I sold the old 2QM15 on eBay for $700 and the guy came to my marina to pick it up. My email address is: windsock1@pipeline.com

Installed 3GM30F

The 3GM30 dropped right in after drilling new mount holes. The coupling sits all of 10 millimeters further aft than that of the 2 cylinder. The weight of the 3 is probably comparable to the 2QM. It is a wee bit snug up forward, but not enough to cause any thought at all. As for behind the engine, why not go for a PSS shaft seal and make your life that much easier. Then, being as you no longer have to get in there to reset packings you can mount a battery above the log as I did. None of this was brain surgery. By the way, the power is QUITE nice! A little bit over 6 knots at engine cruising speed. Let me know if you want more info. Sam Lust tech051@mindspring.com
