Big Red for life

Hello,

I am looking at a Hunter 33 and wondering what others experience is with the boat. What speed should I expect with in mast furling, does vertical battens make much difference? What were the cost of the full enclosure for the cockpit, any recommendations for companies in canada? Finally, what should I look at to add to the bought after purchase?

Thanks

I own a Hunter 33- 2006 # 327. Your question is very broad. I have vertical battans and I would not want to sail without them. My full enclosure cost just over $5000 new. I have gennaker with sock and love it. I sail single handed a lot and can do the gennaker singlehanded. If I had to do it over again I would buy the same boat although I would change out and put a full keel, not the shoal keel. It makes a difference pointing. With 30hp Yanmar I do about 7.2 Kn at 3000 rpm. Not bad. For a 33 or there abouts the interior is incredible. The folding wheel is a needed feature as the cockpit can be a bit tight. The folding table that comes with it is junk and needs reinforcing. The rest of the boat is first class though. It sails very well.

Ours is an '05 H33 # 278. I don't have battens and will easily do 6 - 6.5 knots in 13 - 15 knot winds, full sails, and pulling a dinghy.

For cruising, it's perfect. If you want to point higher, go faster in lighter air, get the battens.

Full enclosure came with the boat so don't know cost but wouldn't be without it. Extends the sailing saeson by weeks at both ends when it is cold winds off the water. Check with the local marina where you intend to keep it for local canvas installers and you'll be able to see their work firsthand.

As far as anything else to add..... who knows. Ours came fairly loaded. I added an engine battery and am looking at 4 golf cart batteries for extended cruising. If you're not cruising overnight etc., 2 batteries plus engine is lots. Battery monitor, inverter, washdown pump, are a few things I've added.

Hi Roan,

I have the 08 model, should be the same as yours, but without the vertical battens. How much more do you have to pay for the sail with vertical battens that a std. one without, also does it make a lot of difference when it comes to sailing? Thanks: Sonny

Sonny, Glenn Henderson came online sometime back and I asked if the verticle batten on Mains helps. Yes, that's what he said 'cos it adds alittle more area by the roach. Also you can extend the clew of the 110% jib lower pass lifeline to increase sail area (skirting) just to get alittle more drive. Down side is you're blinded on leeward side by the sail clothe.

First Season

This is our first season on our H33 (2009 #579). We love it! Very comfortable and it handles very well. Still learning how to sail her though. Some minor problems with the frig but nothing major other than that. The main furling is great and works very well. We have put over 500nm on her since May and did a full 10 day cruise last month.

I have no idea what it would cost to change out to vertical battans. I would guess at least $3000. I believe that it makes a large difference sailing with vertical battans. The sail size is bigger and stiffer.
