Interested for comments on potential performance enhancements for 2005 Hunter 33 with in mast furling and shoal draft. Apart from well documented ordinary DDW performance and sailing a slightly longer non DDW course to keep race fleet with traditional rigs in sight wonder if anyone with same yacht has been able to coax better speed via other / better sails other than factory supplied UK sails variety. Use is 50/50 cruising / racing. Read huge variety of opinions re Hunters from woeful to wonderful and realize one design doesn't fit all but before I needlessly put a hole in bank balance interested to hear thoughts to ascertain if modifications vs cost is a futile exercise. Thanks in advance.

Think of it this way, your sails are the engine that drive the machine. The stock sails that come from Hunter are fine for delivery or just messing about but if you expect performance from them you're kidding yourself. I race my 35.5 and have won plenty of silverware. The only way to do it is with well made quality sails and unfortunately they cost money.
Of course there are many things that go into making your boat competitive but sails are by far the most important.

1. Replace the dinky jib with a 122 Genoa all the way back to the spreaders.
2. Replace the dinky main with a slightly larger but thinner sail (to wind into the mast).
3. Calibrate the speedometer to your liking!

And when you exhaust all of the suggestions above, sail with the motor @ 2700 rpm.
