I have recently bought a Hunter 32 Vision with a 3 cylinder Yanmar desiel. I have quesrions about the cooling system it appears to be a closed system and the motor capartment gets fairly hot any information would be welcome and other things for that set up I might need to know. Please and thank you.

Not really closed. It pulls air through the bilge. It does get warm in there tho. Nothing to fret about however. Just a well-sealed compartment. Check the archives regarding 'exhaust elbow' or 'mixing elbow'. Required reading for Yanmar 3GM owners. Enjoy your boat. I loved mine for over nine years (and so did the next owner).

when I take the cap off of the whar appears to be a small radiator it has anrifreze in it. so it pulls air in to cool that system or does it pull water in from out side. when i started it after sitting for five years the water level dropped about 48 ounces but it has held steady since then. i read on exhausr elbow but I don't even understand the basic concept of the sysrem yet. The motor has very limited hours I say this although I haven't founf the hour meter yet.

You won't find an hour meter. There is none. I did add one. The basic concept is that salt water goes through tubes in the heat exchanger, cooling the flow of anti-freeze in the closed fresh water cooling system. Think of an auto radiator with salt water replacing the airflow. BTW, you should put on your list to change the anti freeze sometime since it does have a finite life. Also, as an added complication, the fresh water flow also goes through you water heater, thereby generating hot water for you when not plugged into shore power. It tends to get pretty hot, so take care tho.

Our 1991 P42 came with a 4JH2 main propulsion and Cummins three cylinder Kubota generator engine in the same compartment. It can get warm after an extended period of motoring, but only warm never hot (over 120 degrees). Yanmar refers to them as encapsulated engines where raw water is pumped in through one side of a heat exchanger to extract heat from the fresh water engine coolant that is pumped in on the other side of the heat exchanger, both separated by a sealed baffle or tubes.

The mixing elbow on our boat is merely a sealed component in the exhaust system where raw water is mixed in with the exhaust to help reduce noise and keep the system cool. In general Hunter has used this design layout in most of their large boat models.
