While sailing my Hunter 310 at boat speed of around 3 knots and higher there is a humming noise and vibration under the cockpit. This comes and goes but is there most of the time. Have tried sailing in gear (forward and reverse)and in neutral. Any suggestions? Dealer is at loss to explain also. Drive shaft has no noticable vibration when touching while this is happening.

Could it be on rigging?

Just because it sounds like it's coming from under the cockpit, it may not be starting from there. Maybe it's something vibrating on the rig and the sound travels to the hull and sounds like it's coming from the hull. Some of my thoughts are a flag halyard, leech of mainsail or jib fluttering. Or might be the lifelines fluttering or something mounted on your sternrail (bimini tie downs?).

My 340 Humming

My 340 has a hum in about 3 knots of wind that I traced to the topping lift. By loosening the topping lift the hum can be made to go away. The taut line supporting the boom is experiencing vortex shedding and oscillates. Perhaps this is what you are experiencing.

The humming and vibration are worse on close hauled situations or reaching. Haven't noticed it downwind

Me too!!!

My brand new 310 has the same vibration in the same way as the author? I have tried just about everthing to find the source of the vibration? What is suggested in the reply posts do not cure the problem. I assume it is not that big of a deal but still, I would like to to know what causes it? I will have to keep an eye out in this form to see what anybody else has to say. Steve, s/v Obsesssion

Unknown vibration

Is your engine still in gear? Does the vibration remain with it in gear and/or out of gear. Can you tell if there is any play in the rudder housing. Please respond Doug.

310... She's a hummer!

I too have the dreaded humming. It is a loud, 400Hz or so tone that does not vary in pitch or amplitude. It is either there or not. It occurs with the engine in and out of gear, when beating to windward and when running off, whether the helm is centered and stationary or actively steering. I originally thought that it was related to boat speed but I have seen (heard) it occurs at anything from 3 to 7 knots. The only common thread to humming episodes is that the wind is generally rising and the boat is accelerating. When below the sound is quite definitely non-directional and it is equally loud in all areas of the cabin. My original assumption was that it was originating underwater with the source being the rudder but I would then expect the sound to respond in some way to an input to the helm and I would also expect onset to be more closely tied to boat speed. The suggestion that the source could be the rigging is a good one and I think must be the culprit. Until we figure this out I will just live with the noise. The boat seems happiest when she is humming :)

More humming

My H30G also hums. It happens at the dock when there is a breeze. I noticed it first below in the metal mast compression post. For a while I thought it was a generator on another boat at the dock, but then I found out it is in the rigging; there is a resonance in the rigging. The topping lift is the main culprit. I can change the pitch of the hum by changing the tightness of the mainsheet.

I agree with Clayton

My 310 seems to be happy when she is humming. Hunter Flew up to Wisconsin and are working on my boat as I type. On Monday, someone who will have knowlage in this area of vibration in question will be here also to work on my 310. I will ask him for his Ideas and post it Monday night. The fiberglass tech. that is here now has no idea as to why our 310's vibrate the way they do. As to other responces, Yes my engine is in gear when it vibrates, it also vibrates out of rear. Still humming...

My 310 is still humming and it does so in or out of gear, forward or reverse. The bimini doesn't seem to be the problem, and in touching lifelines, rigging or rails I can't feel it either.

310 Humming

My 310 hums on a starboard tack between 2.5 and 4 knots. Noticed this in my first sail (sea trial). The dealer replaced the prop with a 3 blade. This helped but did not eliminate the noise. At first I thought it originated under the cockpit but it sounds equally loud in the v-berth. With ear to the stays and shrouds I heard nothing. I think its a "hull thing".
