Hunter 310 Rigging Shakes

New Horizons

I own a 1999 310 Hunter with a roller furling jib and in-mast main. When on a close reach in 10 or more knots of wind the mast "pumps" this causes the whole boat to shutter. This make myself and all other aboard very nervous. The only way to stop this is to roll up a up both the main and jib and fall off. Has anyone else had this issue? What have you done to correct? Not A DYI Fix

Sam, I think you need a rigger to inspect and adjust the rig. Selden has a guide on their website (see link) but I suspect you'll find it beyond your comfort level. Rigs stretch with time and you probably need a simple rig adjustment. Good luck, Rick D.

If its rig tuning problem ....

You can tune the rig yourself if its simply stretched on loosen. I bought the Loos tension gauges (size 0 & 1) and Brian Toss video on rig tuning and learnt to tune my own H326. This way you'll have better understanding of your riggings.

Mast pumping

..is the result of a rig that is way too loose. This will inevitably damage your rig. This is a job that every skipper should learn how to do. It is not difficult and only requires a couple of tools. most yards that step your rig in the spring rarely do a proper job of rig tuning. After it is done correctly you will be amazed at the difference in the performance of your boat.

This had me guessing also. Finally got hold of a LOOS guage, and adj the port and starboard according to the min setting for 1/4" cable. I also have roller furling, so that is adjusted by the backstay. Set that to the min setting. Now when I take it out, I watch the slack on the port/starboard, and slowly tighten them up til theres very little if any slack on either side when on a tack. I give them a full turn twist each time I take it out til the slack is gone. All the experts say the same thing, to tight is bad to loose is just as bad... After the initial tightning, I checked out a couple other boats with 1/4" rigging at my marina, the reading turned out to be the same or very close.
