Hunter 310 Ottawa
I am in the process of buying a 1997 hunter 310 and have a couple of questions as a result of the survey. The boat is currently out of the water. I have not seen it yet but will be visiting it later this week.

1. The surveyor says, based on the scum line, that the boat sits low at the starboard stern. Does this sound normal, or what might be possible explanations?

2 The surveyor measured the draft and says it is 4 feet 6 inches. As far as I can make out hunter built a shoal draft at 4 feet and fin at five feet six inches. This is supposed to be the shoal draft model. I would be grateful of any photos of the 310 shoal draft keel so I can compare it to this one when I visit the boat.

Thanks

Tim

Tim 22 - ?#1 - it may be sitting low if the PO added larger batteries. My boat came with two Group 27's. The battery compartment is in the starboard rear corner of the cockpit seating area and the battery charger is in the compartment accessed from the rear deck on the starboard stern. The PO may have also loaded the area with 'stuff'.
?#2 - I have photos of my boat on the hard and can send photos via email if you wish. Send me a note to whitt6039@cox.net

the low side is often, fairly normal, sometimes just junk, but sometimes a genny or fridge or tool box was added and not balanced....if it is more than a couple of inches, you need to find out why or where the list is coming from. Since she is on the hard he may have not accounted for slope of the hard. I would measure toe rail, down and see for my self along several places around the boat, to get a better idea of where the added weight is..

Not sure how he measured the draft, but it is not always 52".....shoal draft boats may vary by 3 or 4 inches, and someone may have changed the keel in the years since she was built.

And if the list is 6 inches, that would explain the draft increase if measured one side for a list and the other for the draft.

You might ask your surveyor for more information and a better explanation as to how he arrived at this.

Extra weight

My 2007 H-36 when delivered and than in water had a port list, the port cockpit locker had my 4200 gen and 2 -4-D batteries and so I moved the batteries to starboard and it was balanced but since i put 2 folding bicycles and other stuff so a little port list again.
So as said move some stuff and add weight where needed to come near balance
and if a inch or 2 don't worry about it.
I have seen boats listed at say 5' and really 5'3'' do to things moved around or added to boat.
