I am wanting to add a purchase to the mainsheet on my Hunter 310. The boat is currently set up with an arch traveler and uses single Harken 3.00" blocks on the boom and travel. Has anyone out there had any luck with a 3:1 or higher ratio purchase? What size blocks did you use and how did you set it up? I am trying to set up a purchase that will allow me to easily pull in the mainsheet by hand and leave the cabin top winches for the jib sheets.

Walk the docks?

Many good ideas can be garnered from studying other boats. Your problem might be the too little space between the boom and traveller to do what you want. One of the nicest mainsheet setups that I have seen is on a Yamaha in the slip next to me. He has 4:1 blocks and 6:1 inside of that. And with one continuous sheet. So he can fine tune. But he is end-boom sheeted to a traveller in the cockpit so has the space for all of that.

Go to the Harken web site (www.harken.com )?. There is a section which shows numerous mainsheet arrangements. Their technical people will also help. Very nice people.

What I did on my H310 was..

I took the single 3" block for the traveler car and put a Harken #007 dbl. 3" block in its place. I took the old 3" block and placed it on the boom and restung everything to match up, making a 4:1 purchase. You will need to replace the main sheet as the extra block takes up about 10-15 feet of line when the boom is way out. Next, I added a Harken swivele cam cleat to the cabin roof and thus, I done away with the rope clutch for the main sheet. Total cost was about $200.00 but well worth it. I can now single handle the boat much ez'er and adjustments made to the main is now done with one hand from the helm and no winching is needed do to the extra purchase with the dbl. block. I also added a Garhauer 20:1 rigid boom vang ($230.00) and as for performance of the boat now, better sail shape, less weather helm, less heel and more speed. If you need further info, just let me know. I could e-mail you photos that shows what I did. I recently posted instructions on how to messure and install the vang. It is listed in the mid size boat form. Which by the way, you may get more replys to your post if you would post their or in the "ask a owner" forum" as more people read that than this forum.
