Hunter 31 tachometer problems

My tachometer on my 2006 Hunter 31 was working fine one moment, then pegged itself over 5K without a change in engine RPM.

Any ideas what happened, and what the repair entails?

Allan, start by...

finding the tach pick-up sensor on the bellhousing at the flywheel's position. Follow the wires back to a connector. Pull the connector apart and clean it thoroughly with alcohol or an electronic contact cleaner. Crimp down the female connector end to get a tighter fit, put it back together and see what you get.

Thanks for the plan,. I'll see if I can find said connector and give it a once-over. It would be great if that's all it is, but Murphy's Law usually applies.

Tach pickup

On our 2005 H41, the tach gets its reading from the alternator. I have no idea if it's the same on your H31, but assuming you have a Yanmar engine, I'd guess the same. When our alternator failed last year, the tach read zero while motoring. Why your tach would peg, I don't know, but thought I'd share the little bit of knowledge I had.
