I have a 1985 hunter 31 with a shoal draft. The rudder is approximately 8 inches deeper than the keel. If I should run aground the rudder would hit before the keel. Do I have the wrong rudder or is this a hunter design feature?

Never heard this from any other H31 owner. I wonder if someone changed out the rudder/keel?

I'd be especially careful in shallow channels- I have one in my sailing area- its only about 40" wide and the motorboats go thru it way to fast with the stabilizer loaded ( to keep the drinks from spilling) - I have 3-10 draft and at risk of bottoming out in the trough these boat make- (its a narrow and no wake zone...dahhh). I have to time momentary gunning of my 2 banger to keep my boat relatively level and not "jackknifing" on my rudder in the trough as these inconsiderate types blow past in either direction.

It sounds like your rudder was changed out by PO. IIRC on my 28.5, the rudder is only an inch or 2 shorter than the keel depth.

I have an 84 and the rudder is about 10" shorter than the keel (shoal draft as well). If you like I could measure the rudder for you.

A PO could have cut off the keel too. You may want to get some measurements to determine the depth of the keel & the rudder.

You can add an extension to the keel. Mars Metals could help you out.

Yup, somebody either replaced the rudder or shortened the keel. Probably the former. The shoal keel should have drawn around 4' and the deep should have drawn about 5'6".
