I am planning on installing a propane locker in the aft starboard lazarette on the H31 I am buying. Any suggestions as to best way to mount?

Thanks

Does the boat not have a propane locker? Or do you need more capacity?

As you probably know, the locker must be vented from the bottom, and out to the atmosphere so a leak in the locker will “drain” out of the boat. That will involve some sort of containment for the tank, with a drain line out of the bottom and a thru hull to let the gas escape out of the boat.

Hey OP,
I have a 1984 Hunter 31 and I’m planning to do the same thing. I’ve been working on a few designs that seem practical, and I think I’ve found a solution.
There’s enough space under the captain’s seat to install a propane locker with a drain that vents out the back. The propane tank would need to lie on its side to make it easy to pull in and out. You’d also need to use a 5 lb propane tank rather than a standard full-sized one so it would fit in the openng in the lazarette.

I haven’t finalized the dimensions of my box yet, but once I do, I’ll be happy to share them with you.

Are you sure about that? I've been running forklifts most of my life, they're always one their side, what's the issue?

Propane bottles for forklifts are built to deliver liquid propane to the engine. The tops of the bottles have a notch or hole in the frame to ensure it is oriented properly so liquid is drawn off, not vapor.
Propane bottles for grills and cooking gas are built to deliver propane as a gas. They need to be used in the stand up position to avoid any liquid from exiting the bottle.

@Jan_H is correct.
