What mast rake has been found the best for the Hunter 31 (1986 model)? I am using about 8 inches right now, measured from the mast along the boom to the halyard hanging free.

Don't know if you can use that measurement

Bill: I do not know if you can use that measurement. Your boat (same as mine) has pre-bend in the mast. According to the manual the desired mast pre-bend is 1% of the mast height above the boom (.01 x mast height above the boom). On a 50' mast this would be .5' (6") at the mid point of the mast. The H'31 would be more like 3.5" to 4" (I don't have the measurements). Once this has been determined, the mast need to be vertical or slightly raked aft. The more rake the more weather helm.

I have the same question

On the Hunter 31 to measure the rake do you do it like most and hang a weight on the halyard and measure how far from the mast it hangs at the base or the boom? How much should it be, the 3-4"?

I was told some time back that 12"

...is the proper rake. That is where mine is set and I have been most pleased with the boat's performance.
