1985 31' Hunter is showing some compression around the deck stepped mast and some bulging of the beam inside the cabin. Is that a wood beam encased in glass between the mast & post? What is involved to repair.
Thanks in advance.

Darrell:

You are showing the tell-tale signs of compression post failure. There are some photos from some owners that have done the repair themselves. The compression post and the bulkhead are typically the most affected, but the cross member can also be susceptible to the water intrusion.

We would sometimes get water in the light near the bulkhead on the starboard side.

The "basic" repair starts with the removal of the rig and the removal of the compression post and bulkhead (if that has damage). The compression post is pine/fir that is covered with the teak. You can remove the bungs and unscrew the cover to see how much damage there is.

We had ours done by a local yard. The total prices for materials and labor was under $3k (materials & labor). We did not have any issues with the cross members. Our compression post was replaced by a stainless steel post that was re-covered with the teak.

Take a look through the boat projects and you will see that a few of the H34's had the same problem.
