Hi,

I'm planing to buy a hunter 31 1984. Does anyone know if there is balsa core in the hull and if I should be careful about humidity ?

I guess it is impossible to have a boat this age with zero humidity, but when does humidity level becomes problematic?

Any advice?

The hulls on all the Hunters that I know about are solid core. The most important areas to check is around the deck step, cross member & compression post.

Also have the surveyor check out the interior area where the chain plates attach. This area needs to be checked for rust/corrosion.

Great boat.

Humidity...

Croy, it's a boat and it's on the water. Humidity is to be expected. To address the humidity issue, install solar powered vent fans (ala Nicro) on the dorade vents. Set-up for exhaust, they will draw air through the boat day and night when you're not aboard.

Up north where you are, humidity may not be as big an issue as it is down here on the Chesapeake. Good ventilation is the answer either place.

I have a 1984 31 hunter that I would like to sell, it has been completely professionally redone with updates. Wondering how much you are paying for yours? When I'm at the dock I have a humidifier plugged in with hose going into bilge and its awesome always dry and never smells. On the hard I just fill it with damp rid large buckets. Have never had a problem.

When it was reworked did you have to remove balsa core on deck? The one I'm planning to buy has humidity around the mast but it is curently solid ( no swag) eventually if the condition deteriorate it might have to be remooved but I have no clue what this represents in $$.
Price is low for that reason (13k)

Not humidity but moisture content. The cabin/deck area is typically pieces of plywood between the headliner and the deck.

Water can get into this area through a few different places but the most common is the mast area.

If the compression post and cross member are rotten you can probably figure about $3,000 + for a professional repair. When we did our, we also replaced the teak hand rail with SS.
