This may be characteristic of the newer (2006) Hunter 31s, but I thought I would see if others share my concern.

When the wind exceeds about 15 kts, whether in a beam reach or closer hauled, my boat is very hard to hold on track, and wants to head up into the wind. It's like the main is overpowered compared to the jib and rudder.

Any ideas, Hunter 31 sailors?

Thanks,
Allan

As the breeze increases, do you flatten the main out and ease the traveler? This is the first step in controlling the power in the main. Increasing vang tension also flattens the main and moves the draft forward in the main which decreases weather helm.
Also, check your mast rake. A 1% mast rake should be about right. Anything more will help your pointing but will increase weather helm at the same time.

I have an '05 33, very similar. With such a large sail, I usually start reducing the main above 15 knots and can still maintain my speed and keep it under control.

As the wind reaches up to 20 knots with full sail, the weather helm increases and will round up.

15 knots is definitely reef time. I try to flatten mine at ~ 10 and around 12-ish, I have a reef tucked in.

P.S. - I suspect my SA/D is a bit higher than yours.

It good to have a weather helm even for the extra effort on the wheel- if you should ever fall out there is hope the boat will round up. This learned on Prindle !8 catamaran.
