The Projects Continue, I Have A Wheel Pedestal (meriman Yacht Specialties)on My Hunter 31.5 And There Is A 4 Inch Wheel Welded To A Threaded Rod Which Acts As The Brake For The Steering Wheel When You Turn It Clockwise It Actuates Something In The Pedestal That Keeps The Wheel From Turning. Well It Seems There Was A Hard Plastic Sleeve (grommet) That Fits Into The Hole On The Starboard Side Of The Pedestal. Where This Rod Threads Into And I Am Not Sure If That Plastic Or Nylon Grommet Was Threaded Because It Had Deteriorated And When I Went To Screw The Brake Rod And Wheel Into The Hole It Broke In Several Pieces. The Question Is This Suppose To Work Is The Nylon Piece A Grommet And Somewhere Inside There Is Something Threaded This Screws Into Or ??? The Boat Was Missing This Rod With The Round Wheel On The End And The One On My Hunter 34 Is Different Larger Threads And Has Some Mechanism Inside That The Piece Screws Into. I Picked This One Up From A Salvage Hunter Model Boat 28.5 2005 Could It Be The Wrong Size?

Schematics and notes are available by clicking boat info then "Downloads, general Info" then scroll down to Merriman Parts .. That will open a PDF with original Merriman parts etc.. Scroll down a few pages.. You can see what was there ..Your brake mechanism may have rotated inside and is not presenting the threaded hole for the handle.. Pull the compass and you should easily see what is going on in there.. Good Luck !

Hi I took a look inside the pedestal from the top I see the shaft that the wheel attaches to and I also see the throttle linkage just about where the bolt hole is on the side of the pedestal and it looks like a tight fit. I wonder if i am missing something. It looks like there is no brake assy in there unless when the bolt was unscrewed the mechanism dropped down and is hanging under the shaft. I have to put a halogen lite on top to take a good look? I would love to get this to operate as designed. Could i get a peek at the instruction booklet?

i went to boat info and downloads merriman and saw the instructions on how to install the brake but i wonder if the instructions for the replacement are are more clear because the merman instructions leaves allot to imagination to say the least and i don't want to disturb the throttle lever in the process if i don't have to.
