Don

I am looking at a 1993 Hunter 30T. Any info regarding this boat and what to look out for would be greatly appreciated. Don't worry, I will order a survey if I decide to to purchase.

Hunter 30

Don, I bought a 1992 Hunter 30 this summer. I suggest reading the owner reviews on this site; they have lots of info about potential problems, handling characteristics, etc. The biggest thing I've discovered so far is that the entire sanitation system needed replacing. Hunter installed an aluminum holding tank, which has a useful life of about 10 years. So it's not a question of if it will leak but when. Thankfully, I got mine replaced before it had a blow out. So if yours hasn't been replaced, that will be something you'll need to address soon. I also replaced all my hoses at the same time; they were totally permeated and nasty. Also, the head is installed below the waterline and is therefore subject to siphoning and flooding. You will need to address this issue by installing a vented loop. And the head water intake line does not have a filter/strainer on it; you might want to install one to keep junk out of the toilet pump. In the course of replacing the holding tank, I discovered that the floors in the port and starboard aft lockers (the ones in the cockpit, not on the transom) were rotten. The port locker, where my batteries are, had to be replaced. The other side is soft, but I only store life jackets in there, so no weight, so I'll do it later. I haven't heard other H30 owners report this issue, so it may be just something with my boat. I know lots of other 30 owners have made some great improvements to their boats, but the issues above are the only 'problem' areas I personally have encountered that you will want to pay particular attention to as you evaluate and survey the boat. Feel free to email me if you have other questions. I'm in the directory. Sherry

yes it's iron

From what I can find out, including long conversation with the surveyor, no worry. It'll be there long after we're gone.

Pics of cruise on '93 Hunter 30T

Our boat: '93 Hunter 30T. I've set up a website with three pages of pics from a two week cruise we took in August in the eastern Lake Ontario area: Bay of Quinte, Kingston, On. and the St. Lawrence Islands. This is a great area for sailing and cruising. Page three is has the best pics. http://home.twcny.rr.com/ithacaschwartz/cruise/cruise1.htm There's also a link to website with pics from an earlier cruise in the same area. http://people.clarityconnect.com/webpages/schwartz/family/cancruise/cancruise1.htm Note that there are some "personal" type pics and descriptions since these websites were set up for our parents who now cruise vicariously and other friends, fellow cruisers, etc. We love our boat and use it/live aboard for periods from May to Oct. Please email me for more info. Cheers, -- Steve archie.peligo@gmail.com

Buy it

You can't get more boat for the money---this boat was well ahead of its time, especially in terms of interior lay-out. Everybody is copying it now to increase interior volumes, especially the transverse stern queen size bunk. It has most of the features of boats being offered now, but at much lower cost. Sturdy, easy to sail, easy to work on. I'm an average do-it-yourselfer, and have replumbed, installed a new head, moved and rewired the main battery switches to the nav table, added an organizer, clutches, rigid vang, etc. Most of this work was because the previous owner didn't maintain the boat well, but then I got a good deal on it and like to work on boats. The iron keel will rust, and there will undoubtedly be a crack at the hull/keel joint. Its an easy repair when bottom painting. At first I worried about the rust, now I just quickly sand and paint, and don't worry that in 1000 years the iron keel might loose an inch.... Read the reviews, and archieve on the keel and tuning/sail trim. I've thought about moving up to a 36, but can never justify it---why pay moorage, etc. on a 36, when you can get most of the features in 30?
